Mac exhausts / oil cooler question

OK, here I am tearing my hair out trying to find a set of stock exhausts when someone here suggested Mac exhausts.

I had a look and after wiping up the drool on my keyboard I decided they were for me, hang the shipping charge!

Anyhoo, just before hitting the 'buy' button, I noticed the small print telling me they wont fit if you have an oil cooler!

Oil coolers came standard here, it's too hot most of the time not to have them.

So my question is this, Have any of you installed Mac four into two exhausts on a 1978 E with an oil cooler?

I don't know about the oil cooler. I have always heard that MAC is junk. Of course there are very few choices out there for these older bikes. The biggest complaint about the MACs are that they are thinner then stock and will not last as long. I personally have the kerker 4 into 1 on my MNS. I lost the use of my oil cooler when I installed these pipes. I am still on the lookout for a good used or new set of MNS pipes.

I have the Jardine 'spagetti' pipes on my E. I also have a Lockhart oil cooler.
Lockhart illistrates running the oil cooler lines together between pipes 2 and 3. I couldn't with the Jardines. I ran the hoses (all rubber) up the frame downtubes between 1-2 and 3-4.
After 3 years there's been no blistering of the hoses.

I concur with Pat. I have the spahetti pipes also, and I just route the hoses along the frame tubes, and I have not had any problems with the hoses getting hot or melting.
BTW...I have a Lockhart cooler and adaptor plate that I am looking to sell. It does not have the adaptor bolt that attaches the plate to the crankcase, but I believe the OEM adaptor bolt will work. PM me if you are interested. I also have a set of used Mac 4-2 pipes that I am looking to sell.

Which MAC pipes are you getting? I have the 4-into-1 chrome megaphone set and they work with my oil cooler, although the lines run extremely close to the headers.

I haven't had much of a problem with the pipes, although they do turn colors awfully quick if your ratio is off by even a little bit. I have me some nice gold pipes with a touch of blue here and there. I kinda like it though.

my one cent

bob jones at merriam cycles told me these bike never need coolers and he leaves them off, i guess he builds them (motors) all the time and i fugure he knows what he is talking about so i sold my cooler on ebay,matter of fact i sold it on ebay first, the scare is thermal breakdown of the oil or maintaining the quality is what we are trying to avoid...


i live in los angeles, and it's not exactly a cool climate altough it has been, will seen i like my motors running hot really cook the mixture maybe it's my own "old wives" tale in my head

that said, from what i noticed at looking at all the pictures of mac's, the 4-2's you are considering has more room at the center than the stock ones...

so you may be able to keep the kooler, keep the kooler, no practical experience on this but just my half sense, i mean cents.

Just purchased a complete Motard system from MC Performance, which fits with oil filter. Looked at the Mac Pipes on ebay and when I started asking questions from the bottomshelve seller they did'nt even reply.
