Have been looking for a windshield (NW rider really need it for the rain) that I can purchase to fit w/o modification - does one exist?

They make aftermarket ones for the XJ. You just have to make sure they say that they will fit the rectangle handlebars that it has. Most require an adapter to do this. I prefer a full fairing (Even better in the rain... blocks legs somewhat also), but they do cost more unless you find a good used one, but they will normally require a small bit of customizing to fit.

Mine came with a Vetter Windjammer that has a really nice mount and lowers.
So at least at one time, they made a fitted mount for it. You might try searching around for one of the mounts, then Ebay has a bunch of Windjammers on sale, all of them were the same except the mounts.
