Slim pickens!
Hey Joe,
Not many Inexpensive solutions out there. Most aftermarket electronic ones you'll find are for Cruisers and Harleys....$$
This site:http://www.egauges.com/ has a bunch of gauges, and you can look at the Pro Cycle ones, but beware of sticker shock, over $200.00 for ones that can handle 10Krpm, and can work with 1 or 2 pulse per revolution signals.
If you don't mind a DIGITAL look instead of analog, and want to keep it on the cheap, you can make your own with this:
http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/meas/vek2625.htm]Tach Kit[/URL]
This site has a mini-electronic tach, it's reasonably priced, but it only registers 8K, but for some folks that would be more than enough, would keep you from venturing into the actual RED zone!
Otherwise, get a used XS11 one from EBAY, or you can find a tach repair service, I found a few on the net during my searches that will repair electronic tachs!

BTW,
I found this neat tip on checking synch of your tach:
(2) Tachometer calibration:
You don't need to buy, or borrow, any fancy tachometer testers; nor have to depend on THEIR accuracy. No matter what type of tachometer you have, mechanical, or electronic, here is a VERY simple way of checking the calibration of your tachometer. This trick works with anything, frankly. In fact, it can be used with rotating wheels to determine speed, and many other things. What you will do is to take advantage of the extreme accuracy of your electric power line AC frequency. The frequency is held to 60.00+Hz. (also called '60 cycles'). For your Airhead, unfasten the battery negative wires, and remove the front cover of the engine. Reconnect the battery (disconnect when done before replacing cover). Clean the end of the alternator rotor, and mark that end with SIX (6) white chalk lines, or use white paint dabs. These lines should be radial, relatively evenly spaced, from the center outward. You will need the area to be illuminated with a common fluourescent light. You could also use a Neon lamp, or any other light source that is plugged into the power line. When the engine is started, watch the markings. There will be SIX, fully stopped, at 1200 rpm. Same at TWICE and THREE times that rpm, and so on.

If I am thinking correctly, any tach that can monitor a 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine, can accuratly monitor the XS motor if the two pickup coil triggers are "OR'ed" together.
I have wanted to try this, but never got around to it. I planned to do this for my XS fuel injection. Has anybody tried this?DZ
