  • mystery parts for transmision?

    .. does anyone know what the parts #29 washer plate and #32 collar are, and what are their functions? i do not have these in my transmision.

    Hey GNEPIG,

    In your diagram, that spacer is shown WAY TOO BIG compared to what is in the fiche for the 81H/LH/SH and 82XJ's engines!! Here's a quote from the TECHNICAL DATA from the Yamaha parts site for the XJ!

    Drive Axle Bearing Washer for H/LH/SH/XJ

    A new style bearing supports the right hand side of the transmission drive axle on the affected models. This new style bearing is a single row ball bearing rather than a double row bearing as used on previous xs11s. Since this new style bearing is 3mm narrower than the bearing previously used, a collar and washer have been installed between the bearing and the crankcase to maintain the proper clearances in the transmission. This washer is directional. IT must be installed with the beveled edge tward the crankcase and away from the bearing.
    My 81SH had a spacer that went under the washer/bolt like in the diagram on the web site, and in the Clymers!

      .. thanx TC, i guess i could have looked in the book, but it's more fun asking you
      .. BTW i have found about .060" more dog engagement for our first and second gears. i have put the motor back in tonight and hope to test ride by tomorrow night.. i am kind of excited

        WOW!, I like how my transmission shifts now! ag9123 planted the seed and after studying for awhile how the gears engage, i could see what needed to be done. the dogs were only engaging into the gear/wheels at .120", i have made mine engage at .180". now the throw when shifting between first and second is shorter, and shifting into first from neutral seems way easier and not so loud. the trans that i did this change to did not have a problem. the dogs and slots looked very good, so i didn't sharpen or undercut. i will do this change to every XS11 i own from now on. i have a motor on the floor that i will try to figure out how to move 4th gear/wheel over more to shorten the distance between the 3rd and 4th gear shift. i am also thinking of a way to add little clutches/brakes to the gears, to slow them down some or stop them before the dog gears engage them..
        .. can you say synchronized transmissions?
