  • MAC vs Stock, suggestions needed

My left pipe is pretty much shot, and so I am going to replace both. Ebay seems to have a selections drifting throught it, so I just need to figure out what I want.

The big choice is getting the MAC exhaust, or finding a used stock set. My main concern is noise; I know it is abnormal, but I prefer quieter bikes. That said, so long as it is not h-d loud I can probably deal.

This is my travelling bike, so added things like better fuel milage would also be nice
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

I have a 79F with the MAC taper tip set, a bit more rumble than stock, but not loud and get 40MPG.

I think you should try the cherry-bombs like in the other thread! What exactly do you think the jet setting should be for a couple of those?? lol..

        Exhausting option

Check out Harley mufflers on Ebay or at a local Harley shop. I hear they give them away sometimes. I have Sportster muffs on my SG. Sounds really good, a little deeper rumble than a stock system. No offensive noise at all. At speed intake noise thru a K&N filter is louder. With hard bags I'm thinking about trying some of the 29" long fish tail muffs for Harleys. Ought to look good on a black full dress. A muffler shop made adapters for me and did a great install.

I'm not too impressed with MAC. They're less expensive than Jardines, but, at least in my case, the chrome is thin and the baffle rattled in the pipe. In this case, you get what you pay for.

                  Mine must be a Mac?

                  http://singlebirds.com/ben/IMG_0271.JPG

It was an EBay purchase for like $75 bucks used. It is discolored and rusty. And, it rattles, too. It has one screw that is supposed to hold the rear plate in place, but it rattles.

I do like the looks of the this system. I do not have an oil cooler but can use the center stand.

I have a mac 4 into 1 on my 79SF. Yep, singing the blues for about 4" out of the exhaust port.

The baffle did rattle so I took it out and looked for the wear pattern where it contacted the inside of the megaphone. I made a small hacksaw cut there and slightly bent the part out for a tight fit until I had to tap the bafle back into the pipe with a rubber mallet. Rattle is gone.

You will need to jet up about 3-4 sizes on the mains and 1 on the pilot jet with this system.
