fuel pouring out my airfilter box

I bought an 1100 that hasnt run for 10 years. After cleaning the carbs and re-installing them, the bike runs like a rocket, but fuel runs out the bottom of my airfilter box with the petcock in all but the off (pointing forward) position. What can cause this????Can someone out there help? Please?

hmm...probably you have a need/seat with something holding it open or your float(s) are not adjusted correctly.


I hate carbs (and so did Dr Atkins).

Add to that answer...if you have the press-in fuel valve (needles and seats) that were used on the later models, you may have leaks around the orings. Those orings are in a groove on the outside circumference of the fuel valve(s).

Five pounds last week, but then there was the pizza party on the weekend. Healthy breakfast this morn: diet soda and a nice hunk o' steak. 'nother week or two and it's back into my leather pants.( I might even wear them when I go riding, too!)
Leaking carbs:

hasnt run for 10 years

tips of the float needles have grooves worn into them from sitting closed in their seats for ten years, grooves worn due to the minute grit particles in the fuel eroding the tapered tips, floats are bad(filled with fuel), or just improperly adjusted. (from sitting with fuel in the bowls over years, the continual stress on the floats can cause the little tang to bend, sending them out of adjustment)
Pull the carbs and pull the needles. Polish the seat with chrome polish and Q tips. Replace the needles.(any bike shop will have them)bring the old ones to match them up.
Or, like my neighbor's lawn mower last weekend, a piece of crap lodged between the needle and seat holding it open.
Replace the fuel lines, as they deteriorate over time and small chunks can break off and flow to the carbs.

is it leaking while the bike is running or off and at rest? if the latter, you might just need to get used to turning on/off the petcocks....

Jim,
We need to know the year and model of your XS. If it's an early standard or specail, the needls can be replaced. about 1980 and above, you should replace the needle/seat assembly, as they are a "press in" and have an "O" ring for a seal.If the O ring is bad, and it will be after sitting for 10 years, gas will flow past it into the float bowl.
Bottom line:
Read "Tech Tips" on carbs.
Remove carbs, flip upside down and remove float bowls.
REPLACE needle/seat assembly
reset ALL floats to same setting.
replace float bowls, and reinstall carbs.
Use a "carb stick" or vacum gauges to sync. carbs.
You will quit leaking gas, and be running well.

Float Pin Tool

Hey Jim,

Recommend you check with Ken Talbot for a float pin tool since you are going to be working on those carbs.

Well you could get a few more answers
TC and Ken, and others must be busy.

Fuel leak only if: 1) float pin not shutting off/o-ring leak
2) pet cock NOT shutting off

need to see why pet cock not shutting off fuel when engine not running. (vacuum actuated)

Float pin stuck open, needs to be replaced or debris/or worn seat keeping it open

Ken has a neat tool that can help remove the float pin. Problem with breaking off carp post that holds float pin by other methods resolved..

If you use the search feature, can find answers to most common problems w/XS bikes. Even what blade to shave with or what "dog" you might like to have.
