  • I wanna see your Oil Cooler

    Oil Cooler. Yes - No

    Thinking its a must.

I've been told of one, 2 to 3 inches tall by 10-13 inches long. mounts right to the frame, curdesy of the holes in the reinforced frame. it covers the front of the cam. Does that sound about right? Cause it sounds tits to me

well I wanna see some oil coolers. (pics) I'm sure all designs arent the same.

    Who's got an Oil Cooler?

        Oil cooler adaptor

You need an oil cooler adaptor for the XS11. It fits between the oil filter and the engine....

The cooler kit contains an adaptor plate that mounts between the crankcase and the oil filter cup. The plate directs the oil to the cooler, and then on to the filter, then through the engine

            Diagram

I found a digram of one on bikebandit. steal my money will ya.

            Can?
Can it be rigged up from behind the cylynder head where the oil is being pumped up to the cam. Just route some tough oil lin up over the cam to the oil cooler, back across the top of the cam and into the top hole of the Hardlined oil to the cam.

you see my question? it makes sense to me. why mess with driling out my oil pan.

does anyone have an oil cooler hooked up this way. or Better?

I have a factory Yamaha oil cooler that I obtained from a 1981 "Venturer" that I bought for parts.I put it on my 1981
SH.The reason was to provide better cooling at lower cruising speeds on secondary roads. It has worked well for eleven years.
it is about 6 inches tall and about 10 inches wide.It mounts on
the frame in front of the cam cover.Like the previous poster stated
there is an adapter that fastens where the oil filter cover goes with fins that match the oil filter cover.I have original front pipes and the oil lines descent to the adapter between pipes #1&2 and
3&4.With after market pipes that criss cross I am not sure if this would pose any problem.Tommorrow if I think of it I'll take a pic and post it. Eleven_Special

Super Cooler from B&M. The thermostat is B&M too... I think. Bought the adapter plate from Randy Rago. The cooler is a "plate" type exchanger. Supposed to be more effective than the old tube and fin style.

Any certain reason you installed Maxim rear air shocks on your Special?

I did it because I could !? Actually, I had a couple of sets from the two XJ's that I parted out some years ago. The shocks that were on my bike were fagged out, so I just swapped them. I now have a set of OEM MNS shocks on the rear.
Eddie Gravy, Tapping into the steel line behind the engine for the oil cooler isn't very well recieved here in this forum. The line is very small. and it can be prone to leaks. That line also feeds the cams with oil. I had one like that on my bike 14 years ago when I bought it, then I picked up one from an XS 850 SG. I now have a Lockhart cooler, and adaptor plate.

                      excellent

ok wait "isn't well recived on this forum" is very gestapo. haha. man dont scare me away.

so wait i couldnt replace both the block and cam bolt (on the fixed oil line) with a larger diamiter braided high heat oil line over the top through coolers, back over the top to the cam. pumped in line. i dont want to tap in to that brittle little refrigetator water line. replace it and route the oil to get cooled. then back over the cams and down the hot engine.

where is your now cooled oil being collected? should you disperse the cooled oil where it will do the most lubricating?

this adapter plate is required. the only way?

like my tag says dont take advice from me but please give me everyones 2 cents

                      guru s please help.

oh and monday is NY states helmet protest ride in Albany. if any ones in the area.

Just a footnote to the oil cooler discussion. When I installed mine on my SH,a drag racer criticized my decision to do so on a machine not stock with one.His reasoning was that if it were required then it would have had one from factory. Also his idea was in very high performance conditions there was such a thing as wanting the oil as thin as possible for rapid dispersement. The machine mine came off of was a much heavier machine with a factory fairing.I ignored him though with no measurable regrets.

From the cooler it flows to the filter then on to the rest of the engine as normal. The cooler is in line between the pump and the filter. That is the purpose of the adaptor plate, to divert the oil to the cooler, then back to it's original flow.
Some of the XS's did have a cooler from the factory. The XS 850 also had one. I had one on my bike for years. I run one for two reasons, 1, because I live in Texas, and 2, because I have a big bore kit which tends to make them run a little hotter.

Do not tap into the cam oil line

Doing so reduces the amount of oil going there as the pressure drops.
                            You might kill the cams.
Additionally there is not much oil going through that line anyway.
Using the adapter plate at the filter cup lets get all the oil going through the cooler, thus cooling more effectively.
All yurupeen XSses have the factory cooler.
If I had a digicam I could make some pictures. (Maybe on Wednesday )
XS1100 and XS650- what do you need more?

I also had a 1980 850SG and it had an oil cooler.I think the reason the 850's had them was the triples had a problem with cooling and lubing the middle cylinder.
