  • Oil Filters

I don't know if this is the place to post this, but thought it would be seen here by more. Oil filters can easily be gotten from NAPA auto parts. The NAPA number is 4933, and they are well made, manufactured in Europe(Poland), and come with both the housing and bolt O-ring. I change my Vavoline 20-50W automotive oil every 1500-2000miles, and change filter every other oil change. It has seemed to like that for the past couple decades and has absoluty no clutch slipping on original clutch plates and springs. It gets riden fairly normal with the occassional throttle twist and 'speed-shifts' just to make sure it still lets some know what the XS is about.

The magnetic oil plug won't hurt for extra insurance Mason. It's use is kind of a mood point as any metallic contaminents from transmission are trapped by oil filter prior to going through oil pump which pressurizes a given P.S.I. to lubricate and provide a pressurized oil barrier to aviod any direct metal to metal contact of main bearings with crank journels and valve train components. What that amounts to is in most any internal combustion engine it takes only 7p.s.i. to 'hold' a bearing. All standard engine oil pumps create at least 3 times that at an idle. High performance, high pressure high volume oil pumps create 3 times that figure. It is also possible to have too much oil pressure which will cause seal leaks and 'wash' main bearing causing pre-mature bearing failure. Have seen it happen, and it's a case of more is not always better. I believe that there are some 'old school' racers here besides me that can very well relate to that happening. It's basic hydralics related to pressures and volume...........just my .02cents worth.
