    Though I'm sitting..."I stand corrected"

Hhmm... well, Ok... I didn't have a computer at the time and had to use a book years ago, so anyway, here's Kelly Blue Book.

    Again, excellent condition, running, etc.

    May 13, 2006
    1978 Yamaha XS1100
    4-Cylinder
    4-Stroke
    1100cc

    Suggested Retail Value $1080

The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the unit has been fully reconditioned and is in excellent condition. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the unit's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.
    ________________________________________________
    Trade-In Value (Good Condition) $655

Trade-in Value is what consumers can expect to receive from a dealer for a trade-in unit assuming an accurate appraisal of condition. This value will likely be less than you would receive from a private party sale because the reselling dealer incurs the cost of safety inspections, reconditioning and other costs of doing business. Trade-in values are based on clean units in good condition, with all original standard equipment. Mileage/condition and additional equipment may have a substantial impact on the value shown above.

          78xs11 was a bust

Just got back from looking at my neighbors xs11.Not as described is being kind to the old fella. It turned out to be a 79special .It has 7k instead of4k.It had been parked for 10yrs instead of 2.The sludge in the bottom of the tank smelled more like varsol than gas, and the outside needs paint. The calipers won't budge, the exhaust has been replaced with headers, and the air box is gone. There are foam filters instead. Definetly not the excellent bike I was told about. After the initial let down of seeing this thing,I decided it would still be a project I could handle and do most of the work myself. The old man won't come below1200, and I thought the 700 I offered him was high,so I had to pass on this one. Still looking though.

            Where you at?

            Hey DPJ,

Where are you at in the country? If you'll edit your profile and put in your city/state, folks around might be able to let you know of other machines around available. I know a guy down here in Va. that will have several machines, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind letting one go to a good project home!!

Sorry to hear about the old man's stiff price! perhaps you could print out the Kelly Blue Book info, along with this thread, and show it to him, might help him change his mind to a more realistic value!?

                "Why, that ol' weasle!"

Tank comes off for a flush. carbs come off for a complete cleaning, total brake system tear down and cleaning, new tires, new battery, air filter system, who knows?
The bike's street value is... nothing! Though, you'll never be able to get him to realize that.
"Hey Methuselah, the bike's 25 years old, doesn't run, and every system on it needs a rebuild. Thanks, but I've changed my mind."
If the title's clear, out of pity(and I'm not one to show it often), I'd toss the codger $200, at most. And that's just 'cause doin' all the repairs myself costs me nothing.
It'll cost more to get the bike running than it is worth. (unless you do the work yourself) Non-running bikes like this people give me for free. My back yard is full of them. I've got so many bikes under tarps... it looks like a tent city for the homeless.

.. yeah, i get them kind of bikes for about 75 bucks if it has a title. i gave 200 bucks for one like that once, but only because it had a $500 exhaust system on it that was in real good shape, and i wanted it real bad.. nasty condition and no title, usualy 50 bucks or free depending on how nasty and how complete
.. you will find something else easy enough

                    Hey DPJ,

Awesome, just looked up your location on Mapquest. You're only about 50 miles north of Pineville, W.V.!!

If you're not doing anything Memorial Day Weekend, come on down to the CowShed hotel, and get an eyeful of lots of XSives, we're having a Rally there that weekend, you could come and meet many of us in person, and get lots of tips and tricks while you're there!

Some one might even let you ride their bike? I can't remember your riding history, experience? IF you're a novice, then we could at least "give" you a ride on one!

                      T.C.,

Is the Cow Shed in Pineville? Don't know if I can make it or not. Got 3 horses that like to be fed regularly, so getting away for more than afew hours sometimes gets tricky.
The more I read, and look at the pics the worse this xs fever gets. Being around that many might cure it. But whether I make it or not, thanks for the invite.

You have reason to celebrate.....the geezer refused your offer of $700. Realistically about a dozen times what the bike is worth.

Bikes in this neglected/abused condition are a dime a dozen. The cost/effort of cleaning the gas tank (possibly replacing), replacing the petcocks (which likely need a breaker bar to move positions), carb removal (and who knows what debris lurks inside), complete brake system rebuild, tires, battery, exhaust system, and of course you know there are other issues lurking somewhere. Cost of repairs.......probably about what a good running XS1100 could be purchased for.

My original post (that was when the bike was described as VERY GOOD condition) I suggested a price of $700 - $1500.
The geezers bike is worth $50. Not a cent more. 7000 miles on the clock doesn't mean squat when they are in such a neglected/abused state.

You're lucky you've still got the $700 in your pocket!
