I ll make this short and sweet. I have a 78 xs standard and was wondering how many positions the key can be put into. Right now I can only turn it one position. I insert the key and it turns one position to the right. Is this right?

That sounds correct. One turn to the right, and with the handlebars all the way left or rightkey should turn to the left two stops. First stop is fork lock, second is fork lock with parking lights on.
Sometimes you have to push down before trying to turn the key

FYI I've recently replaced my ignition switch, it seems to only be a two position, on/off.

On top of that, it seems to be wired wrong, none of my lights work now.... (!)

To turn it to the left (lock and parking light) you hat to turn the handlebars full lock either way, push in on the key switch, let it raise back up, then turn the key to the left.
