  • oil filter housing

I've had my '81 xs11 special in storage for a few years so I'm basically re-learning my bike. I decided to finally get it running again this summer, which I was able to do with little hassle, until I changed the oil.

I changed the oil and filter and now whenever I start it up, or even turn it over it leaks oil from around the filter housing (made a big puddle on my garage floor). I remembered the o-ring and torqued it up good and tight (even tighter once I noticed the leak).

Can somebody please offer some advice as to how to fix this, so I can finally go riding again?

The O ring rings for thee...

Uh, bro? did you replace those old tired seals with the new ones that came in your fram oil filter box? If not, I'd start there.

If so, I'm assuming you put the filter in on top of the spring, not the other way 'round?

I'm no expert, but this is where I'd start, if it were me.

    Good luck,

There have been MANY among us who have rounded off the bolt because it was over-torqued. Replace the orings.

        Thanks guys,

I'm embarassed to admit this especially since I'm a mechanic but I completely forgot that stupid spring, I removed the filter and re-installed it properly and now Im good to go.

Oops - don't you hate it when that happens. I had one oil change where I forgot to put the oil ring back in and I managed top drop most of the load of fresh oil on my driveway before I even got onto the road. Nasty!

Nice to see another Canuck on the list, especially one as close to me as Canmore. I've got a niece over there too. With any luck you won't get a chance to meet her in a professional capacity when she is on shift at the hospital....
