does it run through the fuse panel?

The signal to the Tach comes from the TCI on an XS I believe. Not sure how the battery power is routed to it, and not sure about an XJ.

Hey FredJohny,

I think Dan is mistaken, the pulse signal for the tach for both the XS and the XJ comes from the Alternator, not the TCI, specifically a tap from one of the three WHITE wires from Stator Coil set! The power is a common 12 volt lead wire, brown!

Many times, when the charging system fails, the tach drops out! The headlight relay is also triggered from that same white wire, so IF your headlight isn't working, then check your charging system. If you're not at 14V around 2500rpm, closer to 12, then you're not charging, could be as simple as worn stator brushes in the alternator!?

Or a blown fuse, as happened to me. Headlamp worked but no turn sigs, tach or brake light. Signal circuit fuse gave up the ghost. Replaced fuse, no problems since.
