My 1981SH had the smootheset running engine ever for years then I shimmed the valves(a procedure I have done annually for years) and it picked up a loud ticking noise after it has heated up.Cold it is like it always was, after running for about 10 minutes it starts to tick.My auto mechanic thought it to be a pin hole in the inner lining of the original double walled exhaust pipes. However the tick seems to be coming from #4 exhaust.I am certain it is in the valve.Any ideas on how I queered it while shimming and ideas on the fix? To add to my post about engine noise:-Correction :the tick is coming from #4 intake.LOL It's getting late.

You do know about the suppliment pages for the later bikes at the end of the Clymers, right? 80 and 81s are supposed to have tighter shim clearances than 78 and 79s. (But I doubt that is the problem).Originally posted by eleven_special
