  • Ignorance about Pod Filters!

    Hey folks,

Excuse my ignorance here!! When I had my Unifilter's on, they were compressible foam tubes, and I knew they needed filter oil to work properly. However, when I got my EMGO cone shaped pods from BikeBandit, the filter portion is encased in a very stiff wire mesh, and I couldn't see how you could remove it?

I was wondering IF I need to spray filter oil on these, or are they designed to be DRY since they are relatively cheap, and then just thrown away/replaced when they get soiled??

Feeling kinda stupid.. , but I'm not alone, another Xsive on the Yahoo group asked me this question, so I wanted to be sure!

Hey there T.C.! Does the foam come off in 2 halves like the Uni-Filter used in stock air boxes? If not, lightly spray them and for cleaning use a degreaser. Castrol Purple is really good for use doing this. You ca n get it at Wally World for bout 7bucks a gallon(in a purple jug). Works really well for using in a spray bottle for spraying on greasy spots, etc. on clothes before puttin in washer. Also, Greased Lightning is good for all that too. Can be compiscated at Wally World, and gallon refills at Home Depot. Hope that all helps.........Brant

        A slick solution.

Hey TC, one look on the bright side, is that the filter oil will grab any extra particles, SO, a light coat wont hurt anything either way. You cant really go wrong with a coat, but knowing what you know, you could possibly go wrong by not giving them a shot.

Sorry I cant be of more help, but I put a different spin on things anyways (im sure you all ready thought of it though)

            ???

they are cheapies that can use a small amount of oil. mine have been on for about 5 years now. but i really do need new ones. the reason they have the screen on them is the filter media is very thin . did i say VERY thin. they would suck right into your motor if not for the screen on them.i have cleaned mine and oiled them with fram filter oil but i think they worked better dry. just my two cents...

Yes you need to oil these. They're like K&N filters and have a cloth element and need the wire mesh to old their shape.

You can buy the expensive spray on filter oil or just dump on some ATF and shake off the extra. I've aways used break cleaner spay to clean the filter before reoiling.

Don't worry if you put a little too much oil on, it'll suck into the engine and not hurt anything. If anything, sucking a little oil into the engine will help keep the pipes from rusting inside.

Back when, it wasn't unusual to add 1 ounce of 2 stroke oil to the last couple tanks of the year before parking the bike for winter.
