Looking at the MegaSquirt website I was reading about a new toy they are working on called "MicroSquirt".
From the site:
"Many bikes use dual VR sensors from the factory and a single tooth on the crank. The Microsquirt should wire right up to it.
James"
MicroSquirt will be sold fully assembled but I think it will be around $400. It should be smaller than a pack of cigarettes from what I hear.
Microsquirt will also be a full blown fuel injection controller too, if you desire that functionality.
Microsquirt is supposed to be in the pipline for the May 2006 time frame last I heard.
In the future it might be possible to take a megasquirt and run a derivitive of the MicroSquirt code allowing for a cheaper alternative for the MicroSquirt.
Once the tuning is done for one XS11, that map could be transferred to other XS/XJ's and left alone or tweaked out with a computer. Megasquirts themselves are serviceable with parts readily available, and schematics etc.
Another possibility would be to build a megasquirt but leave out the fuel injection components (such as the injector drivers) to make it a little bit cheaper. Right now most of the cost is from the case, map sensor, and board itself.
