Please open your bibles...urmm, clymers to page 125 (Figure 44) Those two little mesh gears keep comming apart on me, leaving the shifter dead while riding, forcing me to limp her home, drain the oil, crack the case, and re alighn them. The the hardware seems to be there, where it should be. Also, when down shifting, I have to tap the shifter up a wee bit to lock it into the whatchamacallit to make my down shift. Any Idea's on the problems? No I haven't torn into the tranny yet to fix second gear...that might be this weekend, and no, there is no exesive play on shift sharft no 2, but a little on No.1 ya I know that is more then likely the cause, but I am wondering the root of the cause. And yes, everything is there...Ie circlips, springs...yada yada Thanks...

Upon gazing into the "Good Book", I was perplexed by the scriptures thou hath quoted?? Perchance, did you mispake and bear false witness to figure 44 when thee may have meant to testify unto figure 43??

The teeth in those gears shall go 1 in 1 with the other in perfect harmony, provided thou keepest them on the straight and narrow "paired dotted" path they must follow. Once joined by man, let no demon put them asunder! Let this "C" ring be the symbol of their eternal longing to share their existence always together, and not let them fall from grace.

Once thou has elevated oneself to a higher plane, to be able to return to a previous level of consciousness, one needs to "SPRING" into the proper lotus position, but alas, with age the ability to RECOIL has diminished. A modest offering to the temple will reward you with an amulet of steel that will rejuvenate your spirit and uplift your shiftless Lever, allowing you to reset your A'pawl'ing life force.

Make sure the C-ring on the end of the shift pawl shaft is there! Your shift lever return spring is SPRUNG, so it's not resetting the shift pawl for the next down shift, hence you have to pull "up" on the lever a little bit to put it back into the place where the spring would have placed it, resetting the ratchet action of the shift pawl!

Hey Artic, you gonna have that thing together in time to ride it on down to Revelstoke this summer for the rally? Or, are you gonna have to throw it in the back of a truck, bring it down so we can put it back together again, then you can ride it home?

Well I will have to go check the rally board, figure out when it is, and book some holidays I guess. back of the truck...meh...trailer it... Everyone I know going to sturgis this year is trailering it down...don't even get me started on what I think of that. Hell or high water I'd ride mate.

Hey Artic...............have or had same problem on my 81 Venturer, if I'm understanding what your explainiing. My shift pawl shaft has a bit of end play, and 2nd gear not given the dremal overhaul yet, sometimes making a bad shift (skipping second) to third the shaft that rotates and moves shift forks will kick back other direction since second won't stay in and caused shift pawl shaft to bounce outward from end play and disengage from shifter shaft teeth. Resolved it by putting a thin thrust washer between shift shaft and engine case to keep shift shaft engaged with shift pawl. Just make sure thrust washer is thin enough so shift shaft still pivots freely with side cover bolted on. The other thing that happens from bad shifts when having to skip second is the washer that holds the four little pins in the shaft the shift pawl catch and rotates shaft is one or other of the two raised ears on washer will break off and a pin will fall out. Have had it happen, leaving me once some 250 miles from home not being able to downshift any farther than third. Not bad, wait till it leaves you stuck in nuetral..........fortunately only 1.2 miles from home, and pushed it ALL the way both times..........yesterday being the second time. Only happens around town if I get in a hurry skippin second and don't make a real positive shift to third. For now don't feel like looking upside down pulling things out and fixin', or shift forts bouncing off my forehead going back together. And turning a Venturer upside down is NOT an option, Easier and less time to pull motor than undressin' a full dresser!.........been there.......done both.

Took the oil pan off, found a homeless spacer, and circlip. Wondered what the hell till I went to pull the gears out, and the shift fork shaft gear ( and the right side of the bike) came right off...ah...problem solved as far the shift shafts comming apart on me when shifting. As far as the fubared spring...maybe I was drunk last time I put it on, and mucked something up. I have been known to become a journeyman mechanic when I am influenced by the holy water. Would anyone have a picture better then clymers of the spring propperly aligned? Oh well, time to address the second gear, and put some life into the ol girl. Not being the mechanical type that I think I am, I was about to call ken, offer him an all expence paid weekend to come up here in Grande Prairie. Impressed the hell out of me when I actually got the gears out. Ya I'm tooting my own horn, but you should see the **** eatin grin I have on my face right now, Almost makes me want to go have a beer
