  • Devils Tower update

I started a new thread beacause the last one got to be were you had to scroll the page to the right to read it.
Well it's almost 7: am central and have over slept by a few hours.
Yesterday I changed the oil and filter, checked the tires, gave the bike the once over to make sure all I's are dotted and T's are crossed. Bags are packed and loaded, includeing a jug of water and a small
thing of food. ( It can be a long way from anything here in South Dakota ) MIYAMI is running really good and it seems that she know what's up and is getting excited because she doesn't usually go this far away from home. Seems like she's got her own personality. Little does she know this is the first of many long distance trips for her. I'll keep you all updated in this thread as we roll on. Until then. See ya. Gotta shower and go.

Hope all is well for you so far. It is now 3:30 in the Black Hills, and haven't heard from ya. Was gonna partner with you to Huelett today, but the free beer and pork sandwiches only last til probably 1 or 2 p.m. at the latest. The temperature is on it's way down too. Last night we set a record low of 41 degrees, beating the old record of 47, set in 1964!! I can never remember a rally-week that required a jacket all-day every-day like this year. BRRRRRR!

Well I made it into Rapid City. ave mpg 25. Kinda sucks but cruzin at 5000 rpm at 75 mph in S.D., thats to be expected, kinda was ammusing, Stopped in Wall for fuel and There were alot of cages there with trailers. Low and behold, this is were all the people, ( ya know the fake, wannabe cool, yuppies) unload their brand new Hoglys with no bugs on them, with N.C., V.A., N.J., Plates. Brand new clothes, and get into the cruse mode on their bikes to fool everyone into believing that they actually " road " their bikes to Sturgis. Bah Humbug, I just laugh as I cruz right on by. Had 1 guy dislike the idea that he was getting passed by a Yamaha, and started to play with me, He passed me up, well, O.K. Then he'd slow down ( lost his gonads I guess ) I'd pass him up, Then I'd get the look of how dare you, Then he'd pass me up agian, Well I don't like being played with and I passed him, I didn't give him the chance to pass me agian, of coarse, I don't think that his Hogly will do what MIYAMI will do. All in all, It was a good ride out, I think that it was a little short but I think that I'll make that up within the next few days. I did stop at the S.D.original 1880's town and found out that the $8.40 was worth finding out that the $8.40 was not worth a penny. Just a bunch of old worn out buidings that are falling apart.
I won't be able to post any pics till I get home cuz I forgot my usb cable and am too cheap to buy another. More updates as the journey continues, until then, Keep the dirty side down.

Glad to hear you made it. I'm gonna be running around sturgis tonight, and probably most of tomorrow, and probably at the CHIP tomorrow night. Where did you say your plans were gonna take you riding on Saturday? Maybe we can put a few miles on.

Gonna ride to the rally and get my pin this morning and mabee check out some of the custom bikes. Looks pretty cloudy in the hills but I don't care. I guess this means I'll find out if my " runs rough when wet " problem is fixed. Don't know exactly were I'll be but I'm gonna try and give you a call at home later on today.
I do know that I'll be cruzing through Spearfish Canyon then down to Custer State Park. Gotta go.

Steve, got your note, thanks for stopping by. I'll be in and around Sturgis all afternoon on friday, and then at the buffalo-chip for the concert at night. The wife doesn't wanna camp-out afterwards (you know, too cold and icky and dirty and crap), so it'll be a very late and chilly stretch home. Anyway, I think Saturday should be very open for me to do some riding. I plan on ending up in sturgis in the evening to watch my buddy's band play at the old "Camel Tent," on the west end of main. (I can't remember what the name of that stage is called now) What direction are you wanting to head on Saturday?

Well, I got off to a good start on day two. Didn't do much riding but I did do alot of visiting. Got to meet Nulle and stal87. Gonna hook up with Nulle this evening when his tour of duty is done and sat. MIYAMI and I will be hooking up with stal87 and head out too Devils Tower. Today will be a ride down to Custer, Then back up through a few winedy twisties in the hills.
I saw a couple XS11's parked down town. One from Wy, the other from Co. I took a pic of one and will post it when I get home, They looked pretty rough but the XS is a rough bike.
When I went to leave Stugis and meet up with some friends, MIYAMI decided to be her stuborn self and not start. No spark. This is now the second time she's done that but I've learned to never question why things happen the way they do. Must be a gaurdian angel because every time I get delayed in my plans, I later find out that if I left when I wanted to, I'da been at the seen of bad stuff happening and possibly part of it, As far as the no spark, I have not a clue. I just sit and wait about twenty to thirty min. and she fires right up.
I don't know if I will have access to a computer after today so the rest of my trip will be posted when I get home. Planning on being home Sun evening.
until then, Keep the greasy side down and enjoy.

Well I just got back home. Total miles since wed morning,1280. Not as many a I first thought it would be but as one of my friends said after riding for along time, ya get a case of monkey butt.
Got alot of visiting done, Ate alot of food, Drank a few beers, and got to meet a couple of members. Nulle was busy playing moto cop on a hogley during the ralley. Materi had to work and couldn't hook up, Stal87 and his cuzin road up to Devils Tower with us. Didn't pay to go in ( %ell it's a rock that looks good from a distance ) I got done what I wanted to.
The problem with the no spark issue that seemed to plague MIYAMI turned out to be a neutral switch located under the bike by the gear shift lever. After finding this out, when she acted up, While cranking to start with the clutch lever pulled in, Popped er in gear and she fires right up. Now that I'm home, I can fix the problem.
Suprisingly, I didn't run into any rain, Just alot of wind during the start and end of my trip. Average gas mileage, against a strong headwind at 75 mph 25 mpg. Cruzin the hills, ave speed aprox 50 mph 38 mpg. overall ave was around 33 mpg. I'll reply agian with some pics. Looking foward to the next ride which won't be very long from now, and will not be plannned. Just gonna go and do it. Wherever I end up is what it'll be and I'll post from there. Untill then, keep the greasy side down ride on and enjoy the rest of the riding season (swmbo got a hold of me and I now have honey do's, Darn her anyway)

                  Here are some pics

This is nowhereville S.D. Ya don't want to break down here.

                  Stal87's "H" model

Stal87 on the left and myself on the right

A wolf in the middle of the lions den. This is the place that MIYAMI drew a crowd. I guess that the RUBS havn't seen a bike being fixed on the side of the road. This is after I get her put back together

Packed and ready to go home

Man really sorry I couldn't find ya in the crowd ! Still don't know where that darn Geyro shop is daaaaaaaa.
Well the time we did have I enjoyed and my wife as a dream of going to yellowstone on our bikes and we better get it done soon I am thinking.
Your part on the Harley yuppy makes me laugh as the same thing took place with us outside Alladin WY. and the wife had about enough of the six of them. She let them get about 2 miles ahead and then Bang - sucked the paint right off their bikes when she went by lauging all the way.
Hers has 9,000 miles is all on it and mine has about 80,000 and they run great.
I did get a new windshield for mine during Sturgis. Well take care buddy and next time I won't let you get away. lol

                      Czekus21,

Man, isn't that just the way things work out. The rig I told you about hadn't went out for about two weeks prior....I would have let it go, but the guys that work that rig were depending on the work and me, so I really had no choice. My nephew was over there about the same time as you, and I described MYAMI as I knew her from the pics, and he SWEARS he saw you on the way back from, as he was going to Devils Tower. He tried to flip it around and chase you down, but he said as soon as the traffic cleared, and he wheeled, you were history. He looked in Sundance and Spearfish, but to no avail. I am sorry I missed you guys. We WILL get together sometime soon.

                      Keith Materi

Oh yeah, thanks for the call too.
