  • Sioux Falls to Devils tower

Well here it goes. I hope that I'm posting this in the right place.
Aug. 11th at around 4:00am central, I'll be leaving Sioux Falls headed for the Sturgis Rally to get my Sturgis pin. I was talked into leaving this early by a friend in Rapid City. This will accomplish a few things.
    1). Alot cooler out.
2). Less idiots out on the road.
3). I'll get to Rapid City alot earlier to meet up with him and his Hogley to do the Hulett Wy. No panty wed.
4). Will get to Belle Fourche at an earlier hour in the day to visit with fellow XS members.
This day will probably be a very XSivlle riding day.
    Day 1. Aug. 11th.
350 miles to Rapid City.. 35 miles to Sturgis.. 45 miles to Belle Fourche.. 45 miles to hulett.. 15 miles to Devils Tower.. 30 miles to Sundance.. 90 miles back to Rapid City.
I think this will be enough miles for the first day.
    Day 2. Aug. 12th.
Leave Rapid City Sometime in the morning and head for the Black hills. many different routes to take but will end up in Custer. Then make way for New Casle. From New Castle Wy, up route 85 toward Lead/Deadwood. Then down 385 toward Hill City to the Alpine Inn to have a few frosties and wait the 2 hours to get in and buy a steak dinner. ( some of the best steaks around, well worth the wait ) Then back to Rapid City for the night. ( can ya guess where I'm stayin ? )
    Day 3. Aug. 13th.
Into the hills to ride Iron mountain road, Needles hyway and take in the sights of Mount Rushmore/Crazy horse etc.. Mabee check out some of the attractions like some caves. Custer State Park and the wildlife loop.
    Day 4. Aug. 14th.
A trip down to Hot Springs to get a burger and check out the springs. From Hot Springs via Pringle, Make way to Spearfish through Rapid City and through Nemo. A quick stop in Nemo for a piece of beef jerky and a cold drink. Back on the trail through Spearfish Canyon and the Bridal Falls.
Then off to Sturgis agian to watch the circus freak show. ( thats what I call the Rally) and ride the main drag, park and get a Gyros ( some of the best around ) and check out the bikes ( and freaks ).
    Day 5. Aug 15th.
This trip would not be complete without a cruze though the badlands. Their is alot of Loong fllaatt straaiight roads tehehe if ya know what I mean. Eventually comming out in Wall for a cup of coffee. Then back to Rapid City.
    Day 6. Aug. 16th.
    Head back home
This will be a pretty cool week. If anyone wants to join in at any part of this ride, your more then welcome.
I'll be taking pics and post them as well as ride reports when I get back to Sioux Falls. If my friends computer is not on the blink, I'll start posting reports when I get to Rapid City.
Some of these routes may change a little but not by much. I looking foward to meeting some of our fellow members.
This is planned as my Iron butt week. to get my fill of rideing for the year. ( never can get my fill ) If anyone is planning on rideing along, PM me or send me an Email.
Right now I'm planning on meeting up with Nulle of Belle Forche, and Materi of Upton Wy.
See ya around and mabee during the trip

Be prepared for your gas milage to suck in South Dakota. Too much ethanol in the gas I think...I tried all the grades and I wasn't the only one with the problem.

Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore are cool, and there is some great riding in the Black Hills.

Beware of the governmental types in South Dakota...killing bikers is the state sport and there is nearly no penalty for it...(sorry, a Janklow reference).

    Have a GREAT trip!

Thanks for the well wishes. Ya, I know, Fuel here in S.D.sucks. They call corn up here, S.D. oil. I call it #hit fuel. The big Ethenol companies got the public up here thinking that they're saveing the world by conserving oil, they don't realize that it takes more fuel in they're cars to do the same thing as non ethenol.( kinda like they did back when the government banned leaded fuel in foolin the public )
( look at L.A. and polution, unleaded fuel was supposted to clean that up HEHEHEHEHE )
MIYAMI seems to do alright with the "high" octane fuel and a shot of JP-1 lead substitute/octane booster. Kinda spendy though, if you figure up the cost per gallon. Althogh 1 can of booster will serve about 6 tanks of fuel.
      $2.00 gallon "high" octain fuel.
      $8.00 can octain booster.
Passing everything but a gas station, priceless
Holy %hit. the coffee is working this morning. I just calculated. Dam, that comes to just over $3.30 gall.

I usually don't put the boost in unless I'm in an area, and need fuel, and all they have to offer is low octane, or octane enhanced with 10% ethenol. I hate ethenol in any motorcyle or small engine. It tears up the inards, because of low lubricating qualities it seems to burn alot hotter, ( kinda like runnin 110 octane airplane gas )

            Materi Czecking in!

Yeah, BTW, 11 Aug is my birthday (The Big 40). I don't know if I can join up until the 12th. Hey... what if you modified the route slighty on the 11th, and headed South out of Hullette through Sundance and into Upton. You and any others are welcome to Crash at my place (inside or out, I have a little spread in the country). Then, we could head directly over to Newcastle and just sort of Reverse the route, and ride the entire hill tour you originally had planned, (Custer, Hill City, etc.)and you could end up in Sturgis or RC as planned? If you look at your map, you'll see Upton is situated in between Newcastle and Hullette, and it is a nice ride both ways. Besides, that's where all the cool guys hang out, and I can assure you that cool refreshment is never more than an arms length away. If you don't want to fool with that, I'll just meet you along your original route somewhere, though it will probably be on the 12th.
