  • Long weekend with an Iron Butt start

Just got back from my first Iron Butt ride (officially documented) and I'm proud to say I did it on my 78 XS11 !! A friend on a Honda PC went with. We took off on Thursday morning about 4 am from St. Paul, MN. Our route took us down to Kansas City and then across Kansas to Colorado Springs. It all went well until about 9 pm in Limon, CO where we stopped at sundown for some dinner. While eating, it began to rain and as we were heading out the door the guy behind the counter warned us that the 2 lane road we would be taking for our last 70 miles was known for a lot of deer and elk. That was a long slow ride in the rain, doing about 30-50 mph with eyes wide open for the wildlife. Only saw one deer and he stayed put on the side of the road. We got into Colorado Springs at about 11 pm with 1050 miles under our sore butts.
After a good nights sleep, we went over to the entry to Pikes Peak. There we were warned that it "might not be such a good idea to go up on motorcycles today" due to the rain and mud, along with the cloud cover coming and going at the peak. Been up there before, so we decided to skip it. We took a drive through the Garden of the Gods area, very nice dramatic rock formations. Then we took the drive from hell up 25 through Denver at rush hour. Traffic went from 0 to 85 and back again, over and over. In the rain. Along the way, the core of my header megaphone fell out. I noticed the sound building up and then get really loud. I never went back to look for it, figuring it had to have been run over multiple times. After riding the rest of the way up to Cheyenne, Wyoming with an open pipe, I knew I had to do something about it or go deaf before I got home.
I found a Cenex station where the very helpful mechanic drilled about 10 holes for me around the end of the pipe. Then we got a package of course steel wool and stuffed it up the pipe, lacing up the end with mechanics wire to hold it in. It worked like a charm, dropped it down to very close to pre-problem sound levels. Crude, but it worked. The rest of the trip on Saturday, Sunday and home on Monday went smoothly. Most of it spent running through the twisty's in the Black Hills. The mileage total came in about 2500 miles altogether, with the first 1000+ on the first day.
Now, I need to fix the exhaust in a more official manner. I'm just happy it got home with nothing major. By the way, my gas mileage averaged about 33 mpg, running between 70 and 85 most of time. Also, used about 3 quarts of oil along the way.

      Sore butt!!!

Sounds like you had fun and that's what counts. Glad you were able to do something about your megafones, to bade ya now got to replace it but that's better then the alternative ( valves, Going deaf, ect. ) Hopefully if everything goes right I'll be diong the same thing in Aug. I plan on leaving Sioux Falls Wed. Aug. 11th in the A.M around 6:00, runnin to Rapid City for lunch and to pickup a freind on a Harley then proceed to Belle Fourche Via Sturgis for my pin. In Belle Fourche I plan on meeting up with one of our members ( Curt Nulle ) and proceed to Devils Tower. From the tower, head down to Casle Rock Wy. then to Custer. After Custer make the way to Hill City then back to Rapid City. Of course this won't happen all in one day, ( mabee two ). On the third day it's time to go see the faces and catch some riding through the State park and cut the way up to spearfish via Bridal Falls. Any way it'll be fun. I did this last year and racked up about 900 miles leaving Rapid City ( I trucked my bike from Sioux Falls,, Not this year ) When it's all done it should be close to 2000 miles. You all know when I'm leaving Sioux Falls so this is an open invite for anyone who wants to build up their but calluses. if your intrested post it here or send a pm but evryone's invited. Bring time, money, bed roll and sun lotion will be hot.

Hey Czekus21, that sounds like a great time. Since that is right in my neighborhood, I would like to join in for at least part of it. When you mention Castlerock, WY I assume you meant Newcastle, WY. I live in Upton, WY which is 30 miles west of Newcastle, on Hwy16. Looking forward to it. You may want to PM me or post again when the time draws near for details.

I wasn't planning on Bozeman this year, mabee next year when I get two weeks vacation instead of just one. My mistake on the name of the town You are right . It's Newcastle not Caslte Rock. I'll drop you a line as the day grows nearer. I'll be bringing my digital camera so I can get some pics posted.

Hadn't planned on the rally, but who knows? I still have to fix fuel pet-cocks, carb boots, and do a little re-wiring before August 11. See you in Belle Fourche. Oh, my brother-in-law who is helping me with the XS wants to know if it is OK if he tags along on his VN-1500. Looking forward to it!

2Fast, sorry I missed you. When you come through next year...hey..., where is next years rally?

All is invited to participate during any length of this run. I.m leaving Sioux Falls basiclly to get my Sturgis pin and meet up with fellew members. I'm not partisoned toward any make of bike, *ell I've had Honda's, Kawi's, zuki's, And even a 53 Pan Head, but I like MIYAMI, Figure from Wed morn till Sun afternoon is nothing but riding so if ya'll see a black 79 sf with a Veter fairing and matching Veter saddle bags with an 80 modle seat, high sissy bar and an American flag flappin in the wind cumon cauz theres roads to right and sights to see. As the day groes nearer I'll post some routes that I'll be taking and what days I'll be on them on the Idle talk forum. Seee Yaa !!!!!!!

I just went through Limon on the 11 also, on Day 1 of my week-long loop from KC through the Rockies, then up to the Black Hills, east to Wisconsin, then home. 2629 miles in 7 days, ending with 523 to get home yesterday. An XS11 is indeed a great bike to rack up the miles. Thinking about an Iron Butt of my own next summer!

I lived in northwest Kansas for 4 years, and my wife & I made numerous trips into Denver and the Springs, so we both know Limon pretty well. I can't travel between Colby, KS, and Limon without running into weather, and this one was no different...ran into a severe thunderstorm with 90 MPH wind gusts about a mile from the rest area in Burlington, CO. Between waiting out that storm and getting a late start, I ended up in a room in Limon that night, rather than making it to Denver as planned. Funny, nothing has changed out there...

                      Hey Tom,
Sounds like you had a nice trip. Other than starting point, we did almost the same route. I went right by Lawrence on my way out. The weird part was in Colorado Springs. I used to visit friends when they lived there and every time I was there it rained. It very rarely rains in the Springs (it is officially a desert). Unfortunately, it kept us from going up the Pikes Peak road....
Coming east across SoDak, we were running just in front of a large storm front. We just kept trying to stay ahead of it, and mostly succeeded. Kind of the opposite of a storm chaser! Storm racer?
