  • SE Rally Recon Run

Did a quick 470 mile recon run to check pavement condition for the upcoming southeast rally. Hooked up with jetmechmarty and his daughter for the one day ride.

Mountains are ready for some "Old Bikes in the Blue Ridge" with plenty of twisty roads to challenge us

Hairpin curves there and waiting to be carved

Sign should say "the FUN starts here" (guess I should have slowed down for the pic)

If weather is agreeable, I think the Sunday ride will include this, Clingman's Dome (I'll get routes out tomorrow) Marty anxiously awaiting Sept 27
a nice 7 mile ride up to the top for those that have never driven up here

Only serious road-pavement problem we found was landslide at the western base of "the Dragon" caused by our unusually wet summer

Getting Rally Ready. Marty "scrubbing up" a new set of Pirelli's on Georgia Hwy 60 north of TWO a couple days ago

New Pirelli's working great and doing their thing

Yeah, better slow down a bit for this one!

All that riding works up an appetite. Good BBQ in Cashiers NC

Fun day, and only incident was Marty's night bat encounter after the very pitch black night run over Blood Mountain on the way home.

We did the Saturday and the Sunday ride yesterday. Some of it is like last year, so it you were here, you get another shot at it. Consider last year a practice run. Jeff opened his vault of secrets, so some new twists have been added in. Some of the roads are very technical. One even had a sand trap! The Sunday run has been changed. One of the highlights is an 18 mile stretch that follows white water. You still get a run at the Dragon and enough time to run the Cherohala Skyway if you choose to. We think everyone will be pleased.

We had a Monday evening run at the Dragon. There were no photographers, no police, and no traffic to speak of. We didn't risk our lives, but we had a good run at it!

So, we crammed two days of riding into one! Catch up!

      Hi Jeff & Marty,
It is a long time since I have been to Klingmans Dome.
I must work harder at my scheme.

I was just down there three weeks or so ago, but with a group of boy scouts and driving a Honda CRV. Not the same as the bike that's for sure.

It's not just a ride. It's a fellowship that began with a bike!

This was last year, I was heading down to the XS11 SE Rally. The fog had moved in when I got to the parking lot. No way I could have walked to the top. I have been to the top one time, but that was 20 yeasrs ago.

              Hi Earl,
At least 20 years since I walked to the top too. With any luck we can visit the parking lot again in September

                Phil,
The parking is as high as I can go. It would be a day walk for me to walk to the top and back down and then I would have have help to get on the bike. LOL

I'm hoping my bike will be ready by September. I haven't made any reservations just because I'm not sure, but if I can make it I will be camping. Lol. Here's hoping my first bike will be able to get me there

Can I get one even if my beast may not be ready? I'd like to support it either way

I hope you get it ready in time. My XS in just a big pile of parts that I have got to get started putting together. It will surely not happen in time for the rally this year. I will be riding my Venture again this year.

I hope so too. Gotta rebuild MCs, get either filters or a stock air box, and flush and change any and all fluids. Don't know how long it sat before I got it. Lol. Just waiting to be able to get parts needed
