  • PNW2001 at Deano Koehler's

    {Aug 16-19, 2001 Hillsboro, Oregon)
    {my comments in curly brackets}

    {Part 1}

    {Deano's report - photos added}

    Hey all,
    Well...PNW 2001 is history - the last riders left this morning
    around 10:30 after 3 days of great riding and partying.

    Thursday afternoon the clan started showing up. Once we had
    a quorum we headed off to a tavern out in the sticks called
    Helvetia Tavern. About 15+ enjoyed renewing our friendships
    and quaffing a couple brews.

    {Helvetia lot - Deano's and Carolyne's XJs up front}

    Then it was back to the house for some of the promised hot tub
    and beer combination special. I'd brewed some 8% XSive beer
    for the occasion which went down pretty well.

    {yeah, and from the look of it, Sid and Denny have had almost enough!}

    The next morning it was out to breakfast before starting a very
    scenic 220 mile ride up the Columbia Gorge and around Mt. Hood.

    {started out foggy, but soon cleared}
    {view of Crown Vista at scenic pt on approach}

    {Crown Vista}

    We had 20 of us riding that day with a fine mixture of serious
    twisties and flat out speed runs through some super territory.

    An otherwise terrific day was marred by a crash on the final leg up to
    Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood by one of our friends, Andy Ohme,
    who ran out of tire on a hairpin turn and collided with a van
    coming the other way. Miraculously he bounced off the side
    of the van and sustained only bruises and scrapes during a wild
    tumble. (Leathers and Helmet helped a bunch) His bike, a Harley
    883 Sportster didn't fare so well. The front end was destroyed
    as it was run over by the rear of the van. After 5 hours in the
    hospital, lucky Andy was released and came home to our place to
    recuperate. He is very sore but all in all is one extremely
    fortunate guy. It could have been a much different tale.

    {something you hate to see, but here it is}

    {waiting for the trailer to pick up Andy's bike}

    Yesterday was the beach run. After 30 minutes of some of the
    finest twisties of the meet, we all settled in for some breakfast in
    Newberg. We picked up some local Portland XJ/XS riders there
    and pressed on to McMinnville, home of Howard Hughes Spruce
    Goose. Took a quick tour of the air museum there and then
    headed on toward the coast. After several miles of highway with
    it's share of idiot cage creatures we were back on some fantastic
    country twisters through the woods. We all pulled into a turnout
    along side the road and caught a little kid out of his families car
    peeing into the bushes. The look on his face was priceless as 18
    of us surprised him. The next stop was the Tillamook air museum
    (pilot leading the group!) for a look at some more warbirds before
    heading on to lunch at the Tillamook Cheese Factory.

    {Jeff and Kate Paries had a bit of excitement on the way there -
    a severe tank-slapper at speed, YIKES. Time to adjust that
    head bearing}

    {How many XSives does it take to...}

    {answer: seven}
    {Deano Jeff Barry Denny Jeremy Keith Kirk}

    {oof grunt}

    {Jeff, Geff, Denny}

    The place was packed. Because everything we'd done that day
    was taking longer than expected we ended up modifying our route to
    just a sample of the beach. About a mile from the Three Capes area we
    noticed some bikes missing in action and went back to investigate.
    This time it was a broken throttle cable on a Harley
    Police Special. Amazingly enough 3 Harley folks rode by and
    stopped. One of them runs a Harley customizing shop and was
    able to fix the bike in no time.

    {{ Keith's cable let go. It's a push pull dual cable. You'd think as
    beefy as Harleys are that they'd have a heavier gauge cable!
    About $100,000 of heavily customized Harleys (3) pulled up and
    got to work. When Keith's bike was operational, the lead HD
    man sez "It's about beer-thirty, ain't it? I'm thirsty" and his
    buddy sez "Where's the leftover parts, it ain't a real ditch
    party without leftover parts!"
    }}

    {Sid & Jeremy at Oceanside}

    On our way again we finally got to our sandy destination for a
    much briefer peek than was originally planned. All too soon we
    were winging it back to Beaverton where a dinner of country
    style ribs awaited. Once again the good times rolled on the deck
    as the days events were recounted.

    {Genius at Work}

    {Kate's smiling again - not exactly the look on her face
    after the tank-slapper}

    {D'ya think they'd notice if I snuck a beer???}

    {Jason noticed that the dog drank all the beer...}

    PNW2001 at Deano Koehler's Part 2

    {continued from Part 1}

    This morning everyone slept in a little bit and got to see the
    mountains clearly for the first time when they got up. We took
    some individual pictures of the remaining riders so you'll be able
    to put faces to names when I get them posted.
    Jayne and I really enjoyed seeing all our old friends again and
    meeting a fair amount of new ones. We're already looking
    forward to next year's get together at Doug Heinen's. Here's hoping you all made it home safely - you too Sid!!

    Participants: Carolyne M. & Keith, Barry Lewis, Jeremy Sells, Rick
    Shields, Del, Denny & Geff Zander, Mike Hart, Doug Heinen,
    Dennis McLaughlin, Johnny Yukon, John Jones, Jeff & Katie Paries
    & friend Craig, Jason Raley, Andy Ohme, Sid Clarke, Neal (friend of
    Jason & Andy), David Brown, Jim Middlestadt, Kirk Koehler & Gina
    Giesbrecht, Ben Worthington and Deano Koehler (who they
    followed more out of curiosity than any other reason)

    {My own report - added photos for this report}

    Big thanks to Deano and Jayne for all the planning and work so we
    could all have so much fun in such a great setting.

    Note on bikes represented: The Standard was best respresented,
    tallying 7, though not all at once. XJ11 was next with a total of 5,
    4 Specials, 2 Midnight Spcls, and 8 'other' machines - HD Police
    Special, Sportster, two Bandits, a CBR1000F, two Ducatis - an ST4 and
    a Desmo Supersport 900 (Kelly of Portland Fire Dept and her friend
    Nicole aboard) and a Suzuki SV650. That's 26 bikes, though I think 20
    was the largest group on any one ride.

    I was riding sweep on the way to the coast on Saturday when a group of
    about 15 mostly MotoGuzzi riders and a few BMW's and assorted others
    pulled in behind us, that was quite an array of cycles for a while!

    Since the rally was in Oregon, it's no surprise that it was mostly
    Oregonians, but there were (ahem - *only*) 2 from BC (Sid and Dennis),
    and 8 or 9 from Washington. There were a few no-shows, but the number
    of spontaneous arrivals made up for their absence, at least
    numerically. It's too bad that Gary and Vicki Berg had to be
    elsewhere, as did Glenna Zander. Oh yes, and Capn Hook was a no-show
    *again*. Watch it Hook, we're going to have to take away your
    motorcycle if you don't get with the program.

    Luckily there were no troopers on the stretch of I-84 along the
    Columbia River where some fighter pilot showed how an XJ can pull
    redline in 5th gear with Mike and Jason in his slipstream, and then
    Squid and Del (Mr. Smooth&Fast) caught up (!!!) (well we had to slow
    to 95 a couple times). Can you get a (only a) ticket for going double
    the speed limit?

    {Columbia Gorge Hotel}

    {view from dining deck at the hotel}

    When Keith's throttle cable broke, it was only fitting that the Harley
    riders stopped to help within a few minutes, as Keith had already
    participated in an emergency cam-chain adjustment, and had a 7/8"
    combination wrench (that's only a hair bigger than 22mm) to get Jeff
    Paries top stem nut loose so we could tighten up the bearings.
    Katie's nice smile came back - I wouldn't have been smiling either to
    be riding pillion during a high speed head shake.

    3 or 4 other machines needed a bit of stem tightening during the
    weekend, and a rash of cam-chain adjustments broke out in Deano's
    garage on Sunday morning.

    While it's WAY too sobering to come around a corner and see brake
    lights and bikes scurrying all over the road and shoulders like
    cockroaches surprised by a light, even though Andy's Sportster had
    come to the end of any luck it might have had, Andy had some *really*
    good luck to be only stiff and sore after what looked like could have
    been a head-on and a horrible scene. The van driver took the best
    evasive action she could, and there was an EMT on board, and a
    physician in a car on the scene as well.

    If there was anything else not perfect about the weekend, it was that
    early in the gorge ride, it was overcast, so we didn't get the full
    effect of the Vista House overlook.

    Yet another great PNW gathering, old friends and lots of new ones,
    great rides, fabulous accomodations. Thanks again to Deano, Jayne,
    Kirk, Courtney (no not you Hook), and Grunge for opening their home to
    us.

    {Last but never least, Doug Heinen's comments}

    The Koehler's, Deano, Jayne, Kirk and Courtney are simply wonderful folks.
    Thank you all for letting us invade your world and make a huge mess of your
    home, deck, and hot-tub!

    The ride along the Columbia was superb. I haven't been through
    that neck of the woods in years. The 115mph fast stretch up I-84
    was a gas, followed shortly after lunch by another 110mph blast
    up the foothills of Mt. Hood. My mileage was only about 33mpg!
    Never seen it so bad! So glad Andy was not hurt any worse. It
    could have just as easily been tragic. What are you going to ride
    next, Andy??

    Saturday's ride to Newburg and then onto the Coast was really
    fun. The mileage meter was much happier this time: 42mpg was
    about the best of the trip for my old Midnight. Sorry about Keith's
    throttle cable woes, but the H-D riders do stick together, almost
    as strong as us XS'ives do!

    Sherry and I are looking forward to next year. We hope to keep
    the tradition of the PNW Rallies as the best and biggest in the nation.

    Thanks again Dean and Jayne!
