  • Don't Forget Deer Whistlers.

This is just a friendly reminder for all of you to install Deer Whistlers on your bikes. They are $5 to $10 and will save your life sooner or later. Bambi tastes great but not when your head is up his azz. I don't know that by personal experience either. Just saying.

A few years ago during our annual family rally we were riding in formation in a mountainous area when about 4 -5 deer were spotted in a dense meadow area surrounded by thick brush and trees on the left side of the road. They all spooked when my cousin revved his HD and one of the young ones panicked and ran right at us, I blared my horn and it went the other way in the nick of time. I had just bought 2 pair of deer whistlers the previous weekend, one for my jeep, and one for my bike, but failed to install them. Just goes to show how fast your day can be ruined by such a simple thing. From my experience the little buggers always jump out at the last second and give no time to react.

It's funny you should mention that... We just had a thread a month or so ago talking about how bogus those things are, and that they have been proven to not work at all.

Had a deer last month commit suicide using my 18-wheeler. Hit just below the deer whistles (installed by the PD, previous driver). I'll post pics later...of the truck. No pics of the deer.

My experience with deer whistles for vehicles it that they don't make the deer go "what's that noise, I should run away into the trees". Instead they go "hey, what's that noise? I'm gonna go closer to find out."

          Whistles

Just my $.02 worth. I've had them on all my vehicles over the past number of years. Even if they only work once, you're ahead. I find that during rut, and approaching fawns that they are a maybe. They work great for meadowlarks, buzzards, deer, and turkeys. I'm a believer, but I am always on the lookout for the ones ignoring them. Kind of like the 4 wheelers that never seem to see you!!!

If it keeps any animals away that's good enough reason to put em on for me, that's how I look at it. I've hit many birds in my cars, one of em was a pretty big pheasant. It smashed up the grille on my truck and went BOOM! My first reaction was an instant 4 letter word thinking of the damage, but when I looked in the rear view mirror right after and saw the explosion of feathers I was laughing my ass off and in tears pretty soon. I don't know why. Normally I would feel a little sympathy for road kill. Just reminded me of a Wiley Coyote mishap.

They are just "snake oil" and have been proven to be so.......several articles out there on the subject, so take it for what it's worth.

I use them, and I've still seen deer. However, there was one night where I saw the eyes of a couple deer from way back. It made me wonder if the deer was looking my way because of the whistles. At any rate, because I saw the glimmer in their eyes, I had time to slow down rather than buy venisson sausage at $90/lb... or worse.

People notice them on my bike, and say "are those deer whistles?" I can't help but wonder if they reall mean "Are you retarted? Those things don't work."

Aside from the story above, I can't say personally if they work or not, but if I hit a deer and live, I'll let you know that they didn't work.

                  Robo-Deer Whistles???

Are we talking about the usual air powered whistles or the ones that use electricity?

I'd hate to think that after spending over $300 for something that it wouldn't work..

No, I'm a cheap azz. I bought the $10 ones. From what people are saying that was a waste of money. I'd never heard anything about em before this thread. I just assumed they did some good.

                        Well that's a relief.

I didn't wanna lose faith in the Underwriters Laboratories label on the box.

I mean they won't blow fuses, catch on fire, or shock me so that's ok.

Whether or not Bambi and friends can hear it is way less important IMO.

                          It depends; they're deer.

The whistles do work, sort of, but two microseconds after deer get scared they forget what scared them. They are just as likely to leap in front of you to get away as they are to leap in a more favorable, for you, direction.

Larry: There are always the old and deaf deer with hearing loss caused by years of living around vehicles with deer whistles....

                          Regards,

                          Scott
