  • Turning 50

Well, I hit 50 this month and so did my bike!

It was a great ride that started out with my friend from Australia and I riding south in the rain from Simi Valley to meet up with GarthXS and Jack at Lake Wolford outside of Escondido, CA. After riding the back roads we wound up in Julien, CA where we split up. Garth and Jack had discovered a new highway to ride back to San Diego and Kym and I returned to Escondido and met up with Eagle Tom and Soccer4m.

We left Escondido and spent the night in El Cajon, Ca, then rode out Highway 94 east to Jamul the next morning to visit with some of my family. We continued to follow Highway 94 along the US/Mexico border until it met Interstate 8 and rode into El Centro, Ca. to get some water and gasoline and look at a map to find a way up to Blythe, Ca. instead of following I8 all the way to Yuma. Eventually we discovered California SR34 that runs through the middle of volcanic desolatated wilderness in the middle of [....] nowhere from I8 up to Blythe. From Blythe we went to my friends' house near Parker, AZ and spent a few days helping out before we headed up Arizona and California highway 95 to Las Vegas and a much-anticipated stay at the Sunset Station Casino in Henderson. NV.

What a relief! It was 120 degrees riding from Lake Havasu through Needles, CA and into Henderson and we three (Kym, the poor bike and I) were almost overheated by the time we hit the airconditioned comfort of the casino, a room and several showers before going downstairs for drinks, more time with friends and a huge dinner at the Sunset Cafe before heading upstairs to bed. Sleep. Honest! We were all baked almost as thoroughly as the potatos at dinner!

The next morning we had brunch and checked out of the casino to go spend some more time with friends and family. We introduced Kym to American-style chili cheese dogs and home-made french fries and peach cobbler for dessert. WE spent the night and got up at 5:00AM to beat the heat on the way back to California. It worked and we made it home at about 12:30PM this afternoon whereupon I immediately unloaded the bike, drained the oil and took off down to the Yamaha dealer with the front wheel to get a new tire and have it mounted. Unfortunately for me the Sunday mechanic quit two days after mounting the new rear tire I bought for this trip. The new front tire won't be mounted until Tuesday so there's no rush to do the post-ride maintenence. I can relax!

Now it's time to post a couple of pictures then have dinner at home!

After stopping at my friend's house in Arizona and helping him put a hinge on the flagpole to replace the line and the flags, then going to Las Vegas, the mileage on my bike turned over 50,000 miles on the way home at Fort Irwin Road just outside of Barstow, CA. and I'm glad to be home.

The flagpole has been repaired and both the US and Israel flags are flying along with a small wind generator

    50,000 miles!

    Great ride, Scott! 120..... Yikes!
It's been 98-101 here in Tulsa this past week. But, I always hear that it's EQUAL to the 120 out there.... thanks to the humidity we have here. (Somehow I'm not convinced, though... 120 - that's about the same as the temp on the Sun's surface, isn't it???) LOL

Amazes me still how these 'ole aircooled bikes can take it so well...

    Thanks for the report!

I think it would have been cooler on the Sun but, lucky for us, there were some intermittent clouds to hide under. Come July and August it'll be the same but without the clouds.

The bike held up rather well, actually. It performed almost flawlessly, I'd say but it's picked up a 'rap' at speed. I'll know more later but the oil I drained out this afternoon was in perfect condition with 1,500 miles on it and a new NAPA/Wix filter. I pulled the oil pan to have a look anyway and there were no metal particles's or anything else in the pan. I don't know if it's the transmission/gears actiing up again or something 'new and improved' that I'm just going to love tracking down and silencing.
