  • With 3 you get a rally...

well... there were 3 XSes and an XJ... only 3 riders...
    Does that count?

Busy schedules gave way when the forcast called for a couple of days of beautiful weather this week... and for once... they were right. trbig came down from Oklahoma so he, John and I took advantage of the 85 degrees and blue skies yesterday to head out for an extended ride.

The bad thing about living in our area is that you have to ride quite a ways out in order to get into some country scenery... but once you get out there... it's pretty sweet. A few twisties and some decent straight aways to air things out a bit... Of course, trbig took advantage of these more so than John and I...

Possum Kingdom lake was our destination... the roads leading there start off flat with some decent curves and then turn into some straight roads going up and down some nice hills... nothing like East Texas... but it's still a nice ride and it's out of the city...

The ride out was a leisurely one... nothing eventful... except maybe a high speed pass by trbig as he stretched his bike's legs a little... The ride back... a little more interesting...

Somewhere along the line John picked up a passenger... A wasp apparently decided that flying was too much work and that John's shirt would be a perfect place to catch a break. John disagreed.. after a short argument... John was stung and the wasp was dead. In fact... it was John's lucky day... A suicidal squirrel ran in front of him... It almost looked as though John might have clipped the little guy's tail and about that time, the squirrel turns around... runs into the wheel... decides he wants to live after all and turns around again to run to the other side of the road... When will the squirrels learn that life is not like the commercial where everyone swerves to miss them? There was a young cat that thought about it... but decided against running across the road... having, obviously, spoken with the squirrel...

Down the road, John slows down to point out something lying on the side of the road... turns out to be a HUGE wild hog that had tried to do the squirrel thing and also realized, too late, that not everyone is able (or willing) to risk hitting a tree to save them. A dead hog on the side of the road... I'd make a harley joke here... but the worst is yet to come...
What's a rally of any size without a bike to work on? Once again, trbig was accommodating... About 20 miles left in our 185 mile trip we pull up to a light... John is asking me about my sunburn when I realize, as I'm looking down toward my arms and glance in the mirror... that trbig is no longer right behind me... He was JUST there!
John goes back to find him in a parking lot... something was making sounds that wasn't supposed to... and it wasn't the rider... We follow trbig back to our house... going very slowly (which I know was difficult for him)... He and John put his bike up on the lift while I go pick the kids up from school and they have it fixed and back together again in 2 hours time... Which was a great relief to our kids who we had promised a ride to when school was out... A bolt had worked its way loose on Tod's bike... luckily, an easy fix for the two Gurus...

So we loaded up the kids and went to dinner then took them on a quick 26 mile jaunt through some local roads that are pretty fun to ride... trbig's riding buddy wanted to stay out and ride some more, but it was getting late... and John had to work this morning... We'll make it up to them next month at the Meeting of the Minds...

    "Ahhh, WildKat."

You give my "critical eye" Gluacoma.
    Always an enjoyable read.
Oh, I always spot opportunities for a snide comment... but before I can formulate a good one, I read the next sentance only to find that you've already "self commented", as it were.
I enjoyed the story... yet feel strangly hollow in side.

Gimme something from "Prufrock" next time...,
You know... "ragged claws" and "silent seas" and such.

          No ragged claws here...

just the uncertainty of getting a 30 year old machine going...
          (well, not personally)

Okay... as requested... Prufrock, as reworded by WK:

And would it have been worthwhile, after all,
After the cleaning, the carbs, the T(CI)
Among the fuel lines, among some talk of gas and oil,
          Would it have been worthwhile,
To have ridden off the edge with a smile
To have squeezed the tank into a ball
To roll the engine to some overwhelming question
To say: “I am XSive, come from the dead
Come back to show you all, I shall show you all”-
If one, settling a creeper by her wheel
Should say: “That is not what I meant at all.
That is not it, at all.”
