  • Little afternoon ride in SE Texas

Took a short ride Saturday (12/28/02) with Tinman.
With I on my '81H Tourer and he on his '80SG we took off from La Porte around 4:30 to ride a few miles into the piney woods of Texas. It was a nice afternoon and the roads were fairly traffic free.

We took Hwy 146 out of La Porte and headed into Baytown. We then headed east on FM 565. We took 565, past I10 to FM 1409. We took FM 1409 to Dayton. From Dayton we headed south again on Hwy 146 back to I10. From there Tinman headed on home down I10 and I took 146 back to La Porte. The whole trip was about 2 hours but was a nice break.

It got a bit nippy as the sun started to go down. But we made it thru. Of course nippy in SE Texas is lower 60's. I believe we were riding in upper to mid 50's by the time the sun was down.

I had not been out riding since TeXSive in September so it was good to get out, if only for a few hours.

Planning a longer day ride into the piney woods of SE Texas in March. So all you TeXSives out there get ready. More soon.

    Hey Wayne, Tinman;

Glad you guys got out. I could not ride this weekend. <teeth nashing>

Tried it Friday, and my clutch hand was still too screwed up from the truck smushing. Swelled up on the trip to work and I could not use it on the way home.

A real pain to get that torque-mongering Dragon home with limited use of the clutch.

So we piled in the new Altima and headed for Austin to see my brother for the weekend. Good trip. Would have much rather made it on the Valk.

Hand is good now, but really big thunder-boomers are rumbling about . . . I use the wet driveway principle . . . I ride if the driveway is dry, regardless of the forecast. Today the driveway was wet. Had to blink a couple times wondering why "Big Iron" was not in the driveway.

So I rode the train to work.

    Oh . . . Joy . . .

          March, in Texas. LOL

It will be in the Piney Woods/Big Thicket area.
Somewere around the town of Trinity or perhaps Sam Houston State Park. This will be just a day ride so we will prolly meet late morning so everyone can get there and we will ride till ?
Will nail down more details later.

I always say "I'm in shape!"

                After all, round is a shape . . . .

As a new comer to this group I often wondered if I would "fit" in.
Now that I have seen a picture of folks my age and girth I figured out why we aren't riding 450 hondas or smaller. We don't fit so good! Need the 1100 to make a good ride. Thanks for sharing the picture.

                    Yeah,

Wayne (on the left), Shack (on the right) and me (second from the right) add up to some serious tonnage!

Well at least we committed to two things, food and XSiving. Some of the rest of us have other commitments but they are not quite as obvious. I look forward to meeting some of this crew someday as time and money permit.

                        Hi folks,

it´s a great fun for me to read about your shape-"problems" and particularly the comparison to the 450 Honda´s.

And I read enviously the ride reports in Texas where you get nippy at 60´s degree (F)!
At the moment we have no chance for a ride (on the XS of course!) because we have around 30 degrees F and snow (in Germany)

Enjoy riding and a Happy (and accident-free) new year!

                        Klaus

12-29-02(Sunday) SWMBO and I left out at about 4:30pm for a little sanity break. She asked where we were going and I gave the correct answer, "I don't know". I was wearing my chaps and leather jacket with a sleeveless shirt underneith, she just had a thin leather jacket over a sweater. When we left the house it was 70 degrees with the wind blowing. We made it about 30 miles when we had to stop cause she could not feel her legs and was sliding off the bike. We continued to winnie,TX for a little butt and drink break. While we were there the sun finished setting so we lost the heat from the sun, it was still 69 degrees(or 20c). we started heading for home as it was only a short ride, we had gone about 10 miles before i started getting chilly in the chest. But it was over all a nice little ride , about 70 miles.
