  • So... 48 hours and 814 miles later...

there is pain... but it's a good pain...

The kids are away at church camp until tomorrow morning... They've been gone since Wednesday... so John and I decided that we would take this grand opportunity to go for an extended ride. It's his first since the accident and my first long road trip... WHAT A BLAST!!

We started off Wednesday afternoon heading southeast from the Dallas/ Ft. Worth metroplex toward Lake Sam Rayburn in Jasper, Texas... We couldn't leave until John was home from work, so a bit of a late start in the day... However, the weather was beautiful... partly cloudy skies and mid-80s for temps... and the traffic wasn't bad, so it was smooth sailing...

Hitting the road around 4:30... we took 287 southeast (for anyone who takes this route... 287 runs into 45 and they merge for a few miles... we found this out the hard way ) after 287 breaks off again... the road was incredible! It's a bit of a backroad but it has new pavement in many places... As you get farther from 45... trees line the road on both sides and it becomes a beautiful scenic route, taking you farther into the country... It's fast for a country road, with 70 mph speeds and VERY enjoyable to run... When we hit Crockett, we turned East on 7... This road takes you through the Davy Crockett National Forest... for anyone who has ever been through West Texas but hasn't had the privilege of riding through East Texas... this is a MUST... There are trees... BIG trees... and lots of them (yeah... I know... in a forest... who would have thought it?) 7 splits (no... just one split really), with 7 going to the northeast and 103 going to the southeast, which is the direction we took... This takes you through the Angelina Forest toward Lufkin... It was getting dark by this time, so we were unable to fully enjoy the beauty of the area... but there were very few cars on this road and we had it pretty much to ourselves... Fear of deer kept us from running too fast... but we managed to air out the bikes every so often (it's a requirement)... A stop in Lufkin at a Bennigans, where the service was exceptionally friendly and helpful, for some dinner and we got back on the road... taking 69 until it split in Zavalla where we picked up 63... We could see a lot of lightning ahead of us and were bracing for the worst... but a "God is smiling on us" moment must have been in place... we never had a drop of rain... The lightning kept us on our toes... as did the lookout for deer... luckily, the only deer I saw were on the side of the road... where they stayed (it worked out well for all concerned)... We finally arrived at the lake around 11:00... tired... but doing pretty good... This part of our journey was approximately 250 miles... so a good afternoon jaunt... not too tiring... but the late hour was a bit much for me (I'm an early bird)...

    The next day...

a day at the lake celebrating my sister-in-law's birthday was VERY enjoyable with me going water skiing for the first time ever... I even have a picture of me up and out of the water... while on the skis... just before I fell... receiving my first ever high colonic (ahem)... This trip had many firsts... John was amazing on skis! Definitely made me look like an amateur... oh wait! I AM... so it's all good...

We had a great time with my brother, his wife and her family who had come in for the celebration... but we had some more riding to do... We had made plans to hook up with one of our XSive brethren in the Houston area and needed to get on the road... We left the lake around 3:00 Thursday afternoon heading south on 96 to Jasper where we picked up 190 West... This was a really nice road with many scenic areas such as the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation... However, the clouds began moving in on us and a few drops of rain turned into a downpour... I don't have rain gear (yes... I know) and John left his at home (yes... he knows too)... so we pulled into a local business that appeared to be closed and made use of the awning over the entrance area... There was just enough room for both of the bikes to comfortably fit, so we parked them... and then realized that the business was not closed... Many thanks to the people at the Sam Houston Electrical Coop for letting us stay there until the rain subsided...
Heading out again... we hit Livingston... halfway through town the roads were bone dry and it appeared as though the rain would stay to the East... WRONG... Shortly after hitting 59 in Livingston, the bottom dropped out... We pulled into the entryway to a closed business (yes... this one was actually closed) that had a large awning John thought we might be able to get under... no such luck, as the locked gate kept the bikes outside... We parked the bikes, got under the awning and watched as the monsoon moved through... It was a short wait of approximately 20 - 30 minutes... but we had already lost some time from the last rain stop so we were now about an hour behind where we wanted to be... Wet, but still ready to go... we got back on the road... The sky started clearing a bit and it looked like we would be dry for the remainder of the journey... never get too settled into that line of thinking... as it started to rain again... not too bad this time around though... we pressed on... We made it it Houston by 7:00 or so that evening... not too bad considering the weather...
Hippie Dave was kind enough to play host to us that evening and we had a great time with him and his lovely lady, Cindy... a nice ride and good dinner, along with fantastic company really capped off the day... Many thanks to both of them for everything!

We only rode about 150 - 175 miles on this day... but it was an incredibly full day...

      The final day...

We got up early and checked the weather... rain was spotty all over the state.. but it looked like we would be good to go back to the lake... so that's where we headed, retracing our previous day's journey... A little rain just north of Houston, but it cleared, quickly turning partly cloudy... It was a skosh on the cool side, but VERY nice riding weather...
We stopped at a little cafe in Livingston at the junction of Business 59 and 190 that had GREAT service and really good food at really good prices...

Don't let the outside fool you... the inside is tastefully decorated and has a very nice ambiance...
With happy bellies, we hit the road again... We were able to fully enjoy the beauty of 190 this time since there was no rain... the sun was shining and all was well with the world...
We stopped off at a small roadside park for a butt break and to let the bikes enjoy some of the scenery... Here they are enjoying the nice view of the lake...

Don't they make a lovely couple?

We arrived back at the lakehouse around noon... but fear of possible rain on our trip home caused us to leave a little earlier than planned... It was a bit unwarranted though... the skies began to clear and we enjoyed abundant sunshine most of the way home... stopping at a picnic area to let the bikes enjoy some of the beauty of the local area...

With the possiblity of thunderstorms, we took a more direct return route home taking 69 into Jacksonville (we were thinking about you Mark)... then hit 175 toward home...
We stopped at some point to grab a bite to eat and watched as the clouds began to close in on us... large thunderheads had developed in every direction, so we prepared for the worst and started out again... We ran into about 20 minutes of light rain and that was about it... (whew! I do NOT share Tod's love of riding in the rain)
We made it home about 7:00 last night... tired and a bit on the achey side... but very satisfied with the trip as a whole...

Oh yes! Almost forgot this one... for you VMax fans out there... this was close to the lakehouse we were at...

Nothing I hate worse than a ride report that leaves no room for my snide comments.
Glad that you're both back safely. Sounds like you had a good time.

          My Dear prometheus...

it must be early for you... or you are simply being kind (I won't tell anyone)... I found several things that I could have commented on had I been in your position (which, I assume, was sitting)...

Thank you... good to be home... but wish I wasn't... and I am MORE than ready to head out again!
