Garmin GPS III Plus

I have just recently started using a Garmin GPS III plus, this is the older model since the GPS V is now out. All I can say is thing is awesome! I gave $235 on E-Bay, brand new, with a 2 year warrantee (through the seller) and I got a Battery charger and 8 AA rechargeable batteries. It has full maps of the US already programmed in and you can download more detailed maps for extra cost. ( Like if you wanted all the streets in NYC or something) plus you can get coastal waterways and marinas too if you use it on your boat. You get either the streets or waterways free with the unit depending on how you want to use it. Batteries last about 6-8 hours of constant usage, a 12V adapter is available though.

If speed, altitude, mileage, eta's, etc. are important to you than get one. I checked it against my truck speedometer and it was right on, EXACTLY THE SAME! The best part about this thing is the fact that you can search on the map an pick an exit, and it will tell you what gas stations and restaurants and hotels are there!

I would highly recommend this unit based on my limited experience with it. (About two months)

Sounds very cool, Gary. I've wanted one for quite awhile. But I haven't found one that has all the cool bells & whistles for driving AND flying. Oh...it's gotta cost $200 or less, too!

Me too. I got a little Magellan 300 a couple years ago which is probably better suited to the hiking/boating crowd. It's fairly limited but better than nothing. I can't imagine using it on a bike. Too hard to read.

Who was the seller for your unit?

I looked back through my e-bay records and found, Rabbitank Enterprises. BUT they are no longer a registered e-bay seller. March was the last unit they sold. e-mail was rabbitx1@pacbell.net , I will look through my receipts and see what I can find. Price with goodies was $235 not $199 as I previously reported.

Garmin GPS

I've had a Garmin GPS 45XL for a few years now. Maps weren't available when I bought this. I do hook it up to my laptop and tie it into my mappng software, tho. Had it with me while driving a truck to Minnisota. About 30 miles north of Albert Lea the speedo bounces a couple of times then drops to 0. Thought a moment, grabbed the GPS and threw on the dash for a backup speedo. Worked great.

At work i am an authorized Lowrance dealer.. so i can get all the handhelds and acc. we have 2 in stock but i have been too busy to try them out. You can load the maps into them from a CD on your coumputer.

I recently saw a GPS that also included a FRS radio in it. I think it was a Garmin and about $350. If it can be used with a headset that is auto hands free then this could be the ultimate communicator. It also will send your position to another similar reciever.
