  • Craftsman MICROTORK WRENCH #31423

    Going off the recommendation of fellow forum members, I bought an inch pound torque wrench. This is a 3/8-IN. Drive, measuring 25-250 lbs. Problem was, the spec on head acorn nuts is 300, so I gave it an extra little nudge after the click.

    The click is not loud or hugely noticeable, so you gotta pay attention. I was surprised at the torque value of the cam bearing caps, and how little past hand-tight the spec is.

    All-in-all, for $45 on sale, I'm happy it's in my bike tool collection, and definitely feel confident that the head is on right after using this tool.

    I'm worried, are you taking the mickey?

    Ian,

    <scratching head>
    Did you mix ft-lb with in-lb or are you just talking about your shiny, brandy-new Foot Pound torque wrench?
    </scratch>

    The head and cam caps are aluminum (aluminium for them what need extra vowels and consonants ) so the head will warp, split and probably pull the studs out of the engine case at 300 ft-lb.

    The cam caps will look like the numeral 8 inside instead of a circle and destroy themselves and the cams if you try even the lowest setting of 25 ft-lb.

    XS/XJ1100 head acorn nuts are 3.5 m-kg (25.3 ft-lb)/350 cm-kg (303.6 in-lb)
    Head front and rear lower nuts are 2.0 m-kg (14.5 ft-lb)/200 cm-kg/(174 in-lb)

    The cam caps are 1.0 m-kg (7.2 ft-lb)/100 cm-kg/(86.4 in-lb)

    The Craftsman clicker is a cool tool but you still need something like:-

      Lol, Scott. Keyword missing in that write-up. It's an Inch-pound torque wrench. And, the Clymer manual shows a slightly smaller torque value for the XS head nuts. And, I bought that HF torque wrench last weekend. That's the same one that snapped off the axle holder nut before the click happened.

        Whew!

        Inch Pounds -- man, I was picturing a bunch of smooshed and trashed parts and no you wouldn't be the first to mix up in-lb and ft-lb. DAMHIKIJKOK!

        Yeah, the studs for the front axle studs get pulled into an hourglass like PlayDoh when they're tightened too much, then they just freak and break when you try to torque them correctly. Fortunately they're easy to replace if you didn't go canyon carving to discover the studs are no good....

          300 inch pounds = 25 foot pounds.

          Just keep in mind torque is like measuring. 12 inches = 1 foot.
