  • Eastwood powder coating

So I picked up a new Eastwood powder coating kit (10198). It's a beginners kit but it's fantastic ,in a matter of 30 min I had a few parts coated and baked in the oven ready to go back on my bike.

I have never try this before and the kit was very easy to use ,the results were amazing. I thought I would try coating my inside carb covers to start, at least then if i screwed up it would be hidden. I have a bunch of parts that I plan to paint and the money I will save is well worth the small investment I made. I will post some pics soon camera is on borrow.
    BDF Special
80SG Vetter bagger 1196 Wiseco big bore kit, Mega Cycle Cams, slotted cam gears, ported and flowed head, bronze intake seats, Dyno Jet kit, Dyno coils and Mikes XS air pods, Venture cam chain adjuster,Geezer's regulator, Clutch mod, Mac 4 into 1 with custom built and tuned baffle, Oil cooler,MikesXS emulators mod.
Dyno tuned to 98 hp at the rear wheel.

I've got a Eastwood powdercoater and just love it. These are PERFECT for bike parts.

One tip: if you do any castings, particularly if they've been exposed to grease/oil, pre-bake them to make sure all the goo is out of them.

Pick up some special high-temp polyester masking tape before you get too carried away! Due to its nature, the powder tends to find its way to all kinds of surfaces where you might not want it. If you have to sand/grind/chip it off later from gasket surfaces, you'll get an even better appreciation for how tough the stuff is.

      Here's a sample:

I was actually looking today at getting one of these. Glad it seems to be worth the money.

couldn't agree more about the ease of coating and the quality of finish (don't plan on using your kitchen oven, big no-no, so I did what any good XSive would do, installed an oven in the garage (local craigslist, $50.00) ). The secret, like any good paint job is in the prep. Picked up a sandblasting cabinet and that helps alot in those hard to get to places (be sure to use chemical stripper for all you can as it saves a tone of time over blasting).

Here are a couple of pics of some parts I did over the last couple of weeks (calipers in red and bronze, clutch lever cover and various brake parts in bronze, brackets in black, peg hangers in charcol, carb tops and bowls in chrome, cam cover in black then sanded off the fins, will clearcoat this for longevity). SWEET!

Picked up a Craftsman model powdercoat kit today. It was on clearance for $46. They don't stock the powder so I have to find some or order it before I can try it out.

Foot, that's plenty cheap enough!!! Congrats! and I'm sureyou will enjoy yourself as much as I have so far.

Eastwoods powders are a little high so check around for a better buy (heck check craigslist et al, for someone who did and now doesn't, I picked up a bunch of powder and accessories like that, also got a sandblasting cabinet which really helps). You got a designated oven? TexasRookie

Working on the oven. SWMBO would be a little upset if I used the one in the kitchen. I did find a place that sells a hi temp gloss black. Looking forward to eventually doing the exhaust on the MNS.

Hey Harry... Don't know if you're looking for other colors as well... but Harbor Freight and ebay are pretty decent sources for the powder... not too expensive...

Looking forward to seeing how the pipes turn out...
Once you get yours done... you can do a set of mine too... just to keep in practice...

I had seen alot of matte black high temp paints and powders but no gloss. Finally found one. Still working on finding an oven large enough to bake the pipes in, that might take awhile. They also have a black chrome that I am going to try and see how it matches up with the original black chrome on the MNS. I have seen a couple gold powders that also have possibilities. I might be able to restore to original after all.

                            Powder Coating Pipes not good!

                            Hey there BigFoot,

I'll leave what I wrote below for other novices(self included) in Powdercoating, I didn't see the phrase HI-Temp in your reply above until after I posted this! You might still find the link helpful in acquiring the powders you're looking for!

Powdercoating works well for all of these low temp and modest temp parts, including the engine/clutch adjustment covers and such, but NOT for the Exhaust. The powder coating is a plastisized material that melts in the oven, I can't remember the exact temp, but it's a few hundred degrees. BUT the pipes are easily 500-1000 and it will BURN the powder coating.
Okay, I just did a search, and found some HI-TEMP powder Coatings for exhausts and such, from Caswell plating, etc., here's the link:

PS, Harbor Freight sells a Powder Coating system, but haven't checked to see what brand/model it is, anybody know if it's comparable to what has been discussed here!?

The hi-temp powder coating is good for 1000 sustained temps and up to 1200 for short periods. Caswell is the only place that I have seen a high temp gloss black instead of satin or matte.

I have read that the harbor freight gun is comparable to the eastwood system.
