  • Rust-oleum Reflective spray paint.

Since the first time I say this stuff at Home Depot, it intrigued me. I finally popped for can ($6.98) to see how well it worked. I figured it might me neat stuff for my next fairing paint jab, ghost flames or "strobe" stripes is one of my ideas. The test mule was the white painted, steel bumper on my '75 Power Wagon. The bumper had a fresh coat of Rustolem white and had sat for a week. This stuff is clear coat with reflective material mixed in with the paint. The results from using the whole first can were a bit disappointing, not much reflective effect at all so I hauled down to Home Depot and bought 2 more cans. After the second application, things looked "brighter " and I got decent reflection. The reflection "test" consisted of parking on a unlit street and approaching the truck with the car headlights. Since I had a third can, I gave it another shot. This time the bumper came into view a good hundred yards and of course got brighter as I got closer. Final evaluation; this stuff works good but it takes 3+ coats to rival the reflectivity of good reflective tape. It leaves a simi-glossy finish that that can shined up with some compound, this seemed to improve its effectiveness. I liked it better than reflective tape because it let the parent color show thru. Since its new, I don't know how durable it will be, time will tell. I figure it will work well for my intended "custom" fairing paint job.

I just finished using this Rust-oleum product to paint my frame. The sales person at RONA told me that this is a new solvent based paint that is made by the same manufacturer as Tremclad. It is however, suppose to be better, sticker. I liked the spray can and the fact that the can works in ANY position. There was no tired finger from holding down the spray head like with other types of cans. The paint also proved to be sticky in deed. Even the over spray that settled on the walls was not like dust. It was stuck to the poly. Runs in the paint were minimum given how much paint I had applied in this single application. The paint proved to be so sticky that before I was done my job I had to remove my runners because they were STUCK to the poly I had laid on the floor. That happened when I failed to remain on the move LOL LOL. Overall I got a GOOD end result but.

        Looks very good Rob!!!!

I believe I was at that stage about this time last year.

Ah...........spending evenings in my home made paint booth, painting the frame and related parts until my eyelids started to stick together, that's when I knew I had good coverage and it was time to get out grab a beer!

        LOL!

Thanks Paul ... I couldn't do it in my Garage .. You've seen it. So the roughed in Bathroom was a good choice and at a good temperature for painting. I have one more coat to do and be sure that I don't go lite anywhere.

            Roughed in bathroom?

As in "inside the house" ???

You'd never get away with that if there was a Mrs.79XS11F!!!!!!!!!!

How long will you let the paint cure before stating the reassembly process?

Yes inside the house. There is a roughed in bathroom in the basement. i lined the walls nd floor with 6 mm poly. took every thing i needed into the room, sealed the door closed and turned on the exhaust fan with the fan cover removed to create negative pressure within the room. I painted the frame , removed my disposable overalls left the room and resealed the plastic door behind me. there was no smell of paint what soever in the house. My 300 gallon salt water take is within 8 feet of this roughed in bathroom so I was very careful.
I still have another coat to do to cover some of the lite spots and will also do some of the other parts at the same time. Like the triple trees, engine mounts, peg supports and anything else needed to mount the engine. I will let it cure for about a week before working with it.
OH ... and I would get away with it if there was a Mrs. 79XS11F or she wouldn't be the Mrs. for long LOL LOL.

Spoken like a true bachelor. although I did get away with sitting my carbs on the dining room table, not working on them there, but sitting them there for a while.

Ohh, and the paint looks awesome.
