  • Dyna Coils

The right coil (cyl 1 and 4) stopped firing. I put new coils (Dyna
Coils) on my bike. I also got the 8mm Dyna wires. After installing
them I found I still had no spark at the same coil. Wires were good
from coils to ign box and from ign box to connector behind fusepanel. I
didn't get around to checking the pulse coil to the connector when a
different ign box arrived from an Ebay purchase (I hope $20 wasn't too
much for the box). Turns out the box was the problem all along.

Anyhow with the new coils in, new plug wires, Bosch Platinum plugs
(gap increased to .35") the bike has significantly increased power.
A sharp roll-on in 1st gear at about 20 MPH (not popping the clutch)
had the front wheel hovering just off the ground for almost a block.
I currently have the Pacifico fairing off, the saddlebags too.

This is a power upgrade I'd recommend. I did take step by step
pics...but my 2 year old got ahold of the camera and deleted the
first half the pics. If we'd like the pics and a "how to" write-up
I'll take the coils back off and redo the pics. I did some modifying
for the mounting, the pics would show why I chose to do what I did.

I see around the corner from me is a trailer with a portable
motorcycle dyno. I may call them and see how much to see what kind of
power I'm working with. Has anyone else dyno'd their bike?

I broke the middle finger on my right hand last week.
    Throttle/braking is great therepy.

Let me know on the pics...

Don, the owner of Modesto Buell on Carpenter Rd has a dyno that is in a trailer. Not sure where he lives. Had my 79SF done last year by him. Not sure what he charges, but if you catch him when its setup for a special day at his shop it is cheaper. I paid $20.00 to have mine done. Modesto Buell was having an open house/dyno shootout that day. Here is a link to my dyno printout.

      Pat,

I you want to retake some (a few is all you need) and send a write up to me in word or just text and pictures, i can get it posted in the tips section. even a write up with a final picture would be nice. Thanks!!

        Dyna coils

Has anyone else experienced an ECU (ignition black box) failure after upgrade to the Dyna 1.5 Ohm coils? May just be coincidence but when starting the bike my understanding is that the extra 1.5 resistor is bypassed. Just a hunch but mine failed shortly after installing the 1.5 coils. Going with the Dyna 3 ohm coils and bypassing resistor may be a safer play to not potentially fry a good ECU. Luckily I had a spare.

          Hey Bri-

Your understanding is incorrect. The stock coils are 1.5 ohm coils, and you replaced them with Dyna coils, which are also 1.5 ohm coils. Therefore, the ballast resistor should remain.

If you replaced them with the Dyna DC-1 coils (3 ohm), you would then remove the ballast resistor.

            Update,
Bike still running, just don't ride very often anymore.
Bike now needs work done from sitting so much but no time or inclination to work on it.
But it sits, ready and able when asked.
