i haven't done a lot of shopping around for bikes, especially older ones. A local used bike dealer has a 1980 midnight special 850 for $1999. it has 14,757 miles and from the photo's looks clean. it has been inspected and the dealer has a decent reputation. i understand the quality of the deal depends on the bike being as good as shown.

just looking for an everyday bike to replace my little '81 400 special (although for $2000, i may keep the 400 also for my wife to learn on)

I can tell I'm getting old, I almost started this with "Back in '82" ... Anyway, back then they were great bikes, I had 1 before I bought my first XS1100. If it's in good shape mechanically, it may be worth it. I don't know what a good price would be, I paid $700 for my XS11E, but then have spent $800 getting her back on the road, besides the time involved. Check it out, it's only worth what the buyer thinks it is worth.
