You looking at the European version or the American version?

The stubby exhaust is a taste thing, you like it or you hate it. Otherwise the seat has a split now, and there are minor changes to the fairing. And it is fuel injucted now. The FZ-1 guys are drooling, mostly, unless like me the one I have is just pruchased so I can justify not buying the new one.

Here is what I consider when looking at a motorcycle - it is either embarassing to be seen on, or it isn't, and hopefully it is too fast for anyone to see. When you are sitting ON the bike you can't see much of it. So if it RUNS and LEANS I'll take it. Course, I have to fit on it first, but after that it RUNS and LEANS at an enjoyable speed or it is not mine.

Sally loved the 2006 red one when she first saw it, and wondered if we could trade the silver one (with only 3,500 new miles on it at the time). I said no, 7 more HP (to 150), and as sharp as it looked it was not THAT attractive to trade.

I like it, but not enough to trade. It looks less different in person - I was up close and personal with one at the Cleveland International show last weekend.

      I don't like this photo:
      http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/pr...1/0/image.aspx

as much as I like these:

      http://www.sportrider.com/bikes/2005...m-fz1-01-2.jpg

I like the blue one a lot.

Maybe it is mostly the exhaust. The power increase would be nice but I thought the whole reason they made the FZ1 was to have a character detuned from the R1. Doesn't the new model sport the R1 engine whereas the older models had the heavier crankshaft, carbs, and a detuned cylinder head?

I might change my mind if I could ever test ride one...

Me and Ilene right after I bought it.

I sat on the blue one, but I really liked the silver one.

          continued

Don't know about the crank, my 2005 is carburated, has 143 HP and is a detuned R-1 engine, which is fuel injected. It will go 60+ in 1st, I think someone posted 0-60 in 2.9 seconds (NOT with me on board) and what I bought it for - it corners well.

The new 2006 is now fuel injected, rated at 150 HP. I can mod mine (and the '06) with front and rear sprocket changes, jet kit, high class exhaust, and it will give a stock R-1 a good run for a while, not from a dead start but in a roll on test it will keep up for a while.

          I absolutely LOVE this bike.

Come to the XS East rally and try it on.

Looks like you got the model I like. Either silver or blue looks great to me, I just can't dig the latest styling, I guess.

FZ's are derived from the carbed R1 motors, the difference being smaller 37mm inlets, different porting, smaller airbox, revised exhaust, redesigned clutch, and a heavier crankshaft with 10% more inertia. Latest FZ has a shorter stroke at 77x53mm for more top-end. Previous was 74x58mm.

So come to the WV rally, take notes, then have yours later in the week!

Seriously, start planning and you might be surprised who shows up. I might have my FJR by then.

Now, let's see, which page has Utah... Is that near Kansas? I know a guy who has the shiniest XS's in the world in Kansas.

I agree with you. The tank looks like a camels back and the exhaust... puke.

I dont know why the engineers are screwing with exhausts and making them all look stupid. Several makes and models now have wierd looking pipes i just cant take to.

I like Marty A. have joined the FZ1 club. I joined just a few days ago, 2001 black & silver. From what I've heard the new FZ1 has been redesigned to appeal more to the squid crowd. Smaller tank, pegs silghtly higher and further back. More forward and lower bars for a more lean forward riding postion. If true this would be a turn off for me and most of the "older" crowd as the current FZ1 fits me nice for extended rides. But then again I am not what they are marketing to.

I am drooling over a pretty blue '05 (new) FZ1. I like the looks of the '05 over the '06 (personal preference and the price is right). I also don't really care about the power difference as they both go like hell.

I have two issues I have not been able to get over (yet):

1 - Once a new bike comes home, it is the beginning of the end of my love affair for my trusty XSEleven (Vyger).

                          2 - It has a chain!

.. not really the end for the XS, but you may find yourself riding the FZ more than the XS. it's a cool feeling to go out in the garage and choose wich one you want to ride today. most days you'll feel like an FZ some days an XS. i will ride the Norton to work for a few days and it will feel neet and when i get back on the XS it will feel like a brand new bike (easy shifting, powerful, easy on the back suspension).. when one bike is in the shop or in need of repair, you still have one to ride. or if you have freinds visiting and you want to go for a ride, you have one to lend

.. chains and lubes have come a long way since the old days

I agreed to sell my XS and still regret it a little. It was a nice bike.

Then I jump on Ilene and all that goes away. I mean REALLY away.

And yesterday I did my first chain adjustment in nearly 40 years. Took 10 minutes.
