    XS 750 Special mufflers

Is it possible to replace the mufflers on a 79 special without having to replace the pipes as well? The pipes on my bike are in very good shape but the mufflers are rotting through the bottoms.

      CUBuffs,
I think there is a thread on replacement mufflers. If you can weld, you can put a pair of HD mufflers on the XS. The best part is all the HD people throw out the stock muffler, and they can be had cheap.

I replace the mufflers on my 80g with a pair I bought from JC Whitney. They have a large selection and the prices are not bad. They are the same brand of "universal" mufflers Dennis Kirk and Chaparrel sells. They have different lengths and you should be able to find a set that will stop where your stockers did. I did have to get an adapter from Pep Boys to make the mufflers fit the stock header pipes. Some minor modification to the stock hangers was also necessary. I fabricated a stop for the center stand. One thing to watch out for when you modify your stock hangers is to make sure the mufflers clear the swingarm and your brake pedal when you bolt them up. All said, it was not a hard project and ran about $160 for both mufflers and the exhaust pipe adapters. Exhaust note was ok and seems to have improved with use, not loud but they dont sound like a runaway outboard either.
        When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g Hardbagger

Mike's XS has a decent supply of slip-on mufflers as well. Around $40-60 each.
