Well friends... Here we go AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN (3 GT80's)
I've built a couple of CT70's for the grands and they are "Basically" done. Just waiting for the oldest grandson to be able to touch the ground and one will be gone. However, I have 4.5 Grandsons (one due in January) and only two bikes.
I always admired the GT80's although I never had one as a kid. They were pretty quick and "LOOKED" like a "REAL" motorcycle. Since the CT70s are going for absolutely STUPID $$$$$, I've been looking for the GT80s.
I recently saw a local ad for a GT80 and the price seemed pretty good. I committed to buying the bike (over the phone) and then arrived to find multiple missing parts which were certainly sold on Evil-Bay although the seller claimed they were no good. Really? The swing arm, forks, rear brake hub, tank, seat, etc. were ALL no good? Yea, RIGHT!. Well I took it anyway and will certainly never deal with that guy again. Lesson learned never promise the $$$ until you SEE the bike!!
So, now I got bit by the "BUG" and started looking for more (or a parts donor). By working the "Back Door" on Evil-Bay and finding a guy selling GT80 parts in Alabama I contacted him and purchased two (generally complete) GT80's for a very reasonable price. I picked these up yesterday......
Now, there will be a heck of a lot of work to do to get these operational again. But, I believe with a handful of parts, and a TON of labor time, I can get TWO machines restored and operational.
The plan is to make them as close to OEM as possible. I do like the Competition Yellow paint scheme of the earlier GT80A & GT80B and the first bike I purchased (the one I got taken on) was a 1974 GT80A.
I'm struggling to find an aftermarket/re-pop seller offering parts for these bikes??? For the CT70 there are DOZENS of sellers (outside of Evil-Bay) selling re-pop parts that look and function like OEM. For the XS11 and other XS models we have MikesXS and XJ4Ever.
I can't find a seller offering a similar selection for these. ANY IDEAS???
Thoughts?
