Virago 535

One of SWMBO's co-workers just picked up an early 90s 535 Virago. This should be a great bike for her to learn on because of its low saddle height, fairly light weight, etc. Gave it a quick check over this afternoon including a vacuum sync, brake fluid flush, clutch cable lube, and steering head check.

The sync was so far out of balance it was only running on one cylinder at idle. I've got it balanced now, but I wasn't able to find any pilot screws like the XS11 has. Any suggestions where to look?

Hey Ken,

Just looked at the Yamaha Parts catalog, and they list a pilot screw KIT/Set..part #39, and it appears to be in the same location as on the XS11's, but since the carbs are positioned on their side, or facing down so to speak, the pilot is on the Diaphragm side, but on the BOTTOM, or inferior aspect of the carb body relative to the ground....in otherwords....next to the intake mounts!!

Actually, in the light of the nextday, I was able to find the screws. I got the rear one adjusted to a very nice sweet spot, but didn't have so much luck with the fron one. Either some gorilla cranked it in, ot is has become fused in the carb body. Either way, the soft brass screwhead stripped before I could get it broken loose. Next time the bike is over, I'll grind a new slot with a fine diamond burr in a dremel, then carefully whack it loose with an impact driver. If that doesn't work, I'll drill it for an e-z-out and pick up some new needles.

i think it was hard to get a good idle on these viragos my bro has the single carb setup on his bike and it runs like a dream
