X 750 Special fuel tank question

I used to own one of these, but I don't remember what the capacity is. Isn't it around 5 gallons or better? I know there are some differences, I compared them years ago, when I still had my 750 SF and I know there would be some modifications required, but in the endless search for a Special tank with larger capacity, nothing is ruled out. Please don't tell me to just swap over to a Standard tank, I just don't think that the Standard tank is all that appealing on a Special.
I have a spare 1100 Special tank, and Dennyz has posted pics on how he enlarged a Special tank to 6.2 gals, but I'm kinda keeping other options open...

I believe it's about 4.5 gallons,,,,,,according to my clymers book, never tried to swap them though

There's one on ebay right now that is going cheap. With shipping it would be about $40. Would be fun to play with. I did try to swap them, that's when I discovered the differences, and didn't want to risk messing up the only tank for my 750 at the time.

Let me know what and how major the diferences are,, I have a spare 750 parts bike for my 750SF, maybe I'll play around with them!

The two biggest differences are : The pockets that are in the tunnle of the tank that mount the front of the tank to the frame. I don't remember if the pockets are higher or lower on the 750 tank, but that is one difference. The other is the indentations on the bottom of the 11's tank, to clear the valve cover. The 750 tank does't have them. I think the over all length was similar.

Now I asked nicely not to tell me that. I even said please. I don't like the look of the Standard tank, especially on a Special. I like the tear drop shape of the Special tank. I just can't get any kind of decent range. My fuel light comes on around 75 miles, and I'm in reserve by 80 miles, and out of gas by 95-97miles. I usewd to get 110 miles from a tank, but the big bore/big pipes/big jets really suck up the gas at 70-75 mph. I can do ok at 45-50 mph, but I only get to do that once a week or so. The rest of the time is spent on the daily commute to work, and back.

Couldn't resist. Get this though - my stock standard XS11 cruising at 100 -110 k.p.h. never got more than 11 - 12 kilometres to the litre. But my 1196 with big jets, 4-1, free flow filter, hot coils and ported head does 15 - 16 kilometres to the litre easily. More power and better fuel economy - weird.

How's it going Guru, here's some pasted info on the 'Little island of NZ'.

New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere and lies in the South-West of the Pacific Ocean. It is comprised of two major Islands (North and South) and a number of lesser islands, the largest of which is called Stewart Island. The country is approximately 1600 km in length and the total land area is 270,000 sq km. The coastline has a length of 15,134 km.

John, if ya can cover 15,134 kms in a couple of days you're doin well! Even with a notorious tr**ple clean!

I had no idea just how big NZ is. Must be some beautiful riding there. I have seen the Lord of The Rings movies, and they were filmed in NZ. It sure is some pretty country. Good to hear from you again.

I've seen pictures of NZ also, and thought it looked nice. Plus I heard it's a decent place to retire in, medical stuff and what not was supposed to be more affordable than in the US.

Yeah and as much as there is a friendly rivalry between Aussies and Kiwis, they get alcohol so much cheaper over there it's just not fair. From a student's perspective.

Plus, after years of flinging the common heckle that there are more sheep in NZ than people, hint hint nudge nudge, my roommate comes to me with a look of shock on his face, reading an atlas, and states that for the 20mil Australians there are 135mil sheep!
