What was that?

Today I saw a bike I didn't recognize.
It was a 3 cylinder, 250cc, 2 stroke, street bike. Looked to be from mid 70's. Looked like it had the original 'burnt orange' color of the Hondas of that era. It looked to be in original shape, not an offroad (race) bike that was converted to street legal.
Anyone hazard a guess or sagely tell me for certain what it was?
It was smokey and loud and wasn't very fast but I bet it handles like it's on a rail.

Sounds like a Kawasaki S1. There was also a 350cc S2 and a 400cc S3.

The 500 was the H1 and the 750 was the H2. Both were wickedly fast.

Super fast 120 mph as fast as you could shift gears, lousey drum brakes and handled like jello in the coners. But man could it wheelie ya hadta hang over the front end to take off fast! I left my girl friend at a street light one day when i raced a 750 Honda. Honda lost, girlfriend got a sore butt lol. She was not a happy camper. ....................MITCH
