  • bandit 12 jets: attn: Mike Hart, Gary Granger

    Hi folks,

I'm getting ready to rejet my 99 bandit. Just put a supertrapp can on the thing, it's definitely louder, and stronger.
Now I want to rejet to get still some more power.

Having problems getting any useful info on what style pilot jet goes into the 1st gen. bandits. I already ordered some mains, but without the pilots in my hand, nobody can be sure of what style to send me. I tell them the carbs are mikuni bst36, but apparently this isn't enough info...

I'm hoping one of you guys who has done this, Gary, Mike,
can assist with perhaps a pic of the pilot jet that came out of yours, maybe a description would suffice.

I'm too cheap (poor) to buy the full kit from holeshot, and would really like to get the parts together before tearing into these carbies.

Thanks for any and all help, as always...

Perhaps an easier way to help would be to view this page and identify which one looks like the bandit pilots you guys used...

    different jet styles available

    Thanks!

James, what air intake mods (if any) have you done?

Are your carbs *completely* stock? (no shims on needles, etc)

Do you have any lean symptoms? Any sign of a flat spot around 4krpm, like it's sluggish there for a bit?

You may not have to change pilots, and if you do, you'll likely have to go *down* one size...

It's been so long since I've done mine, I have to dig around to find the little box of leftovers, so don't hold your breath on that...

With more flow possible from the Supertrapp, decide where you want to be with the intake before you rejet - K&N filter in drilled box, K&N Pods, or what?

Haven't done any intake mods yet, but figured I'd go ahead and put on the K&N dual oval pods like you've got. My thought is to go "stage 2" so I'll ditch the airbox.

So far they're completely stock, but I'm planning on at least one shim per needle.

Right now it's very cold blooded, and I get a lot of popping on deceleration. Little rough around 3-4k but not terrible once it warms up.

You may not have to change pilots, and if you do, you'll likely have to go *down* one size...

Stock pilots are 37.5, I would like to get a set of 35 and a set of 32.5. This way I can go one step at a time.

I can relate to that, old parts can be hard to catch up with in my garage too, especially the really small ones.

If all else fails, I'll just end up taking a pilot jet with me to my local dealer, and hope he has the style/size I want in stock. Who knows, I might get lucky...

Agreed, to mess with jetting without first considering air flow would be silly. Thanks for the response, Mike, really appreciate your help, as I know you've been through all this before.

James, don't worry about decel pop, it's a good thing. If you tune it out, you'll be way too rich.

With dual pods, I have 150 mains and 32.5 pilots. Mileage is still 40+ and response is awesome throughout. I think I leaned the needles 2 notches? well, inbetween, used 1 or 2 shim washers. IIRC, one notch = 3 shim washers??

Watch out for those little o-rings around the vac nipples, they are easy to lose!

                update

Well I've been holding off, because I'm not so sure I need to play with the jets. I'm also just a little bit chicken, and don't wanna mess up a good thing...
The bandit's running really strong, the only thing I don't like is that decel popping, which many say is no big deal.
If I can get even more power without a lot of fussing, I'll do some intake/jetting mods.
Can you guys describe your experiences with these mods on your bandits?

                Thanks for all the help!

Last year I was running an RF 900 can, remove snorkle and cut 2" hole next to original, put in a UNI air filter, shim needles .043", Rejet with new pilots (35) and mains (127.5), idle mix screws out 3.5 turns, floats at 14.5mm. Seemed to take a while to warm up, though. Bike had great power and awsome mileage. 38-40 mpg in hard twistys, and up to 50 mpg on highway.

Then, I started to notice a rattle in either the mid pipe or can and found a new Wileyco SS Exhaust with midpipe on eBay for $135 and got that. The only change I made was I changed the needle shims from .043" to .050" to make up for the free flowing exhaust in the mid range. I probably didn't need to since I think mileage has dropped a little......but then again, I am not sure since I have put so few miles on it this year and usually I am hammering it.

Anyway check out the Bandit FAQ for lots more good info.

The jets are Pilots BS30/96 xx where xx is size, Mains 100/604 xx, same deal. If you are looking at a chart The mains are the 'large round type' and pilots are 'bleed' type. Here is the guy to buy them from:

                  Big Mike's

That where I got mine, he has done hundreds of the 2" hole mods and can point you in the right direction as far as type and all that. If you need more info, just ask.

                  Later,
