  • XS750 Gearing

Has anyone changed the gearing on their 750? I just got back from Sturgis (approx 4000 mile trip) and I sure wished my bike could go faster. At 70 mph, I am turning 5000 rpm.

Was thinking a shaft drive assy from an XS 850/1100 might help the final gear ratio.

    Any suggestions?

I'm in the same boat. I have an XJ750, and I clocked 3519 KMs on my way to and from the Oromocto rally. My engine was happily revving (more like wailing) at 6000 RPM all the way. Boy do these things need a 6th gear.

But even if the revs are way up there, I think that it's more a comfort thing than a potential speed thing, as at 100 MPH (160 KM/H) and still pulling, they can still go mighty fast. I haven't even found the top speed on mine yet.

As for the solution, I heard that the early models had taller gearing in the (middle or final, can't remember) drive and it was changed to get better acceleration. The 1100 parts don't bolt on as the whole case is different (bigger). Try a search, there was a thread about this a while back.
