    My $20 project bike

    I got a Early 80's suzuki GS550L for $20.
It's complete it was just sitting for god knows how long. I was able to start the engine, but it wants to die as soon as I touch the throttle.
Haven't gotten it to move yet.
Anyone on here have any knowledge of these bikes? I'd like to talk to someone who does.

OK, first off, change the oil NOW.
    Filter too....
Check the tech tips: what to look for in a neglected XS....it's pretty much the same.
Change the petrol, clean carbs, change plugs.
Let it idle for a while. Let it warm up. If the problem remains it's most likely carb related, but I wouldn't rule out the electrics.

If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.

Yeah I had to start it by jumping the solenoid. THe starter button doesn't work and neither does the horn.

Contacts are probably corroded. Easy fix there.

I had a 1980 Suzi GS1000. Many of the same probs. Sitting outside forever and it would turn over but not crank.
Changes all fluids sparkies and all. Then had same problem with starting but would not accept throtle. I had to clean, and clean, and clean, the carbs. It was a bitch but finally got it. So hang in there.
Also, if you havent already, make damn sure your tank isnt rusted and that your petcocks are working. I have alot of problems with that myself.

          Good luck.

My nephew has that very same bike, got it with less than 3k miles on the odo. He has had it tore down to the bare bones and now rides it every day and it runs like a champ. If you have specifics, let me know and I'll ask him.
