Most likely the kickstand switch or the kickstand relay, it's a Nerf feature that's supposed to kill the engine if you shift into gear with the kickstand down.
The switch is on the frame at the kickstand, the relay is most likely hanging from the frame under the fuel tank. If he's lucky, unplugging the relay will let the engine run but the warning light will come on.

And no, it's not "hot wired", the ignition has been broken. But I agree, sidestand switch. My BMW had the switch fail on me a few years back, in Las Vegas, NM.

Heck, the guy may have stolen the bike, can't figure out how to make it work and just wants some fool to show up expecting cashy-money. Think "Wild Turkey Surprise."

I had this same issue. My bike wasn't hot wired, but found the problem to be a clutch lever adjustment. It was off just enough to stall the engine when I would put it in gear.
I know that the post the person left may have expired. If it was my bike I would hunt anywhere for an answer. Hopefully he will hunt around and find a site like XS11 and latch on.

Mstic2k, a bad clutch lever/clutch adjustment would do it; not quite the same as grounding the Kill wire from the TCI with the Safety Interlock system but just as effective. There's also a clutch switch that can add a whole other level of weirdness to the electrical system that you really don't want.
