Not a huge fan of that engine. I took my 750 and 850 out the other day (love the OEM exhaust note), then I took my newer Triumph out with a triple in it, lol. I have a affinity for the Triples.

Last year I bought the MT-09 Tracer (or the FJ09) as you call it. A bit more allround than this one. That triple engine is a gem and its torqier than the Triumph triples! It's a mini hooligan bike.

The bike looks very small. I saw a Youtube demo ride. The bike pops wheelies unexpectedly.

At my age, I prefer something that can have luggage for motocamping and touring. Also not a fan of retail prices for a new bike.

Of the 5 bikes I have purchased, $3400 for the 2003 FJR is the most I have paid. $2000 for a 1997 Honda 750 Magna. $1200 for the 82 XJ1100. $900 for the 82 XJ650. I don't remember what I paid for the XS400 Special II but it was not much.

            2000 ZRX1100 - sold

I agree. Only bike I bought new was my GSXR-750. My Triumph I bought cheap for it's low mileage, and it's a great touring bike. A gentleman's sport bike, as the media calls it, but it'll still spank the heck out of this new Yamaha.

                    Yeah, this one looks tasty!

Relatively lightweight, with plenty of HP and torque for the street. Short wheelbase and stiff chassis should make it nimble and easily flickable.

Bit of a tall seat height at 32.7 inches, though.

I may just have to pay a visit to my friendly local Yamaha dealer ... and take one out for a spin.

                    Hooligan, indeed!

                      Actually.... I didnt like it.

Yep, Nimble, Flickable, Pulls like a schoolboy in any gear from almost no revs, front wheel almost doesnt live on the ground at all, but, and i must be getting old, it was incredibly uncomfortable out of town at highway speeds. Its short wheelbase and light weight make it hard to keep on line on long sweepers, and it tended to wander quickly on straights. It was really at home in short twisty's and you'd expect that, but not all roads are like that.

It felt most suited for short trips on winding roads, but largely impractical for long trips. It comes with luggage as an extra but the bags are pretty small.

It was fun but I think i'll stick with the 1300.

                        Thanks!

Based on the spec sheet and the look, I assumed Yamaha designed it to be an in-town, short-hop streetfighter/hooligan type of bike ...

Albeit one with lots of power!

And your riding evaluation confirms those suspicions ... thanks for posting your impressions of the bike, Brian ... it's good info.

Besides, as you say, you still have the XJR to ride!

Wish I could have one ...

I really dont see anything retro about this bike other than the fact that they brought back the Triple motor...uninspiring and i couldnt use this type of bike anyways...Why cant they just bring over the XJR1300?
