We are working on my Sons 850, reworking the carbs and have a question. One, the pilot screw, it is capped off so you cannot tune it. Can we uncap it to tune it and leave it open or do we have to recap it? Also, the fuel level, we are setting them to actual fuel levels, not measuring only. Where should the level be, at the base of the bowl like the 1100? These are Hitachi carbs. I am a member of triples forum I just have a hard time navigating that software. I was hoping someone from here can help.
    Thanks,
    Tim

On the XJ, caps over pilot screws indicate that most likely the pilots were never adjusted from factory, i.e., never serviced after the bike was purchased.

Most of the time, the caps are missing. You have to remove the caps to screw the screws all the way in and then count the revolutions screwing them out.

Caps help keep crud out and nothing more.

I do not know anything about an XS850 other than the triples are awesome looking.

    cheers

Yes, base of the bowl. I have two 750's, and three 850's. But, word of advice: get rid of the Hitachi's, and find some MKII'S.

Well we are keeping these for now. I see why people get rid of these just based on the rebuild. My god whoever designed these should be shot! Got the caps off of the pilot screws only to learn one of the three was out only 1/4 turn and the other two were seated???

Well, that does not make sense, as there is no way a proper stoichiometric A/F ratio was happening with those adjustments.

I would agree with that. We will see how it runs when properly adjusted.
