Hey! Looks nice!
That boxer will go forever. 33 k's not much at all.
Looks like it's been well cared for.
They make a forward, fold out touring peg set that replaces the black plastic area on the heads. They're not cheap, ( but what is for a BMW?), but work really well.
A friend of mine put them on his '04 RT.
I assume they'll work on the RS, too?
Might be worth checking into.
They fold up when not in use, and look like the black plastic pieces. Fold out for pegs.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Ben,
There are lots of similarities between the RS and RT, but there are lots of differences. Frame, chassis, plastics, faring design, instrument panel, suspension...
Both are boxer twins, both are shafties down the right side...
Funny story time...
Few years ago, I had just bought my Connie, and Maximan had just bought his GS. He bought it used, with 60k miles on the clock, but it seemed to be in great running condition. Very similar drivetrain, but the dual sport.
We decided to run into town in Stillwater, Ok. We pull up to a stoplight. He challenges me to a drag race, bragging about how it had more launch torque than my C14. I said ok. He did jump out ahead for a bit, then I blew him away.
Next light... I made a few electronic settings changes, and was more prepared for a more aggressive launch this time...
Light changed, I heard him rev up, and I took off like the space shuttle...
Looked back, didn't see him! Turned around, went back a half mile... there he was... creeping at about 10 mph! We had to trailer it back to his house.
Took it in to BMW of Tulsa, they had it for weeks. We figured it had smoked the clutch, the way it acted. They replaced the entire clutch setup... still no luck!
Rick... here's some inside info you may or may not be aware of...
The RS, RT, and GS driveshaft is an amazing feat of german engineering... how it works as well and long as it does... is anybody's guess!
It's a round shaft that's been molded in rubber! And that somehow holds up w/o twisting. Unless you're Maximan, determined to beat a Connie off the line!
Yep... You guessed it... he twisted his driveshaft inside the rubber portion.
Had to have a new shaft. He asked an old, long-time BMW mechanic at the KC dealership if he'd ever seen that before, or if it was common...? He said in 40+ years of working on BMW's he had only seen it happen one other time.
Rick, if you ever see how these shafts are made, you won't believe how it could ever last more than a mile... but yet it does! It's one of tge great mysteries of the universe...........
Word of advice... just don't be drag racing it at stop lights!'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

I believe thats Mark..not Rick...Thanks for the expalnation guys...I was looking at a 98 R1100RT...and that is the same boxer motor...I like it but am rweally concerned with all i hear that can go wrong in the drivetrain evrything from the clutch to the final drive...so I have heard those are BMW's weakest links... so now I just want an '81 XS1100 venturer...
Bob ..thats funny ...sounds typical of Cody....
Mark I wish you the best of luck with it ...Hope its as good as it looks..1980 XS650G Special-Two

Mark
Cody's RT has been awesome. Aside from this one incident, so has his GS.
They're great bikes. I'd love to have one in my stable some time, (if ever I have a stable...)
Recently Mark, I saw there's been a recall on certain years of RS, RT, and GS for cracked rear hubs...caused from guys over-tightening the wheel bolts.
Cody's RT had all of his rear wheel bolts turn up incredibly loose when he returned from a trip once, but we saw no hub damage. Re torqued, hasn't happened again.
You might inspect that some time.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Mark,
If you should ever decide you'd like to put a Rostra Cruise Control system on it, it can be done.
It's not easy, though.
But Cody and I got it figured out.
2 big hurdles to overcome... The bowden box ( no problem...solved.)
And the early RS/RT's have no VSS sensor. ( insert custom-sized neodynium magnets in front rotor bolts, attach pickup coil to fork- problem solved.)
Then there's BMW's weird braking system and canbus...
We also have put them on 2 GS's. They have a VSS setup.
Bohn and Cody loves theirs!
Let me know, if you're interested in one.'82 XJ1100J Maxim (has been sold.)

Hi Mark.
My late brother had one of those. He menionted to his wife that he was going to look at the local dealer. Came home with stars in his eyes......but over dinner told her as much as he liked it it was too expensive.
A few weeks later,on their wedding anniversary, she handed him the keys and offered to drive him to the dealership to pick it up.
The payments came out of their joint account
I hope you enjoy yours for many years. Your arse won't look big on that
