  • so im buying a suzuki...

I recently bought a big ol' pacifico fairing for my special. Someone here had mentioned that it is enormous! I figured I'd look for some later style windjammers and I came across this suzuki on eBay.

Here is the original text from the ad:

This is a very nice bike body in great shape motor runs great has real low miles problem with gas tank motor not running on gas think gas lines need replacing spray starting fluid runs great great project for the summer wont take alot to get road worthy again ask any questions has good tires no rips in seat or leather dresser NO TITLE WITH THIS BIKE no intrest in it anymore no reserve

I basically paid for a fairing, and I got a whole bike! Eastcoaster can help me get the title situated and it should be easy to get her running. The best part is that I paid only $81 for this bad boy! I think I'll ride it around for a bit before selling it. Well see how she looks when the snow melts. I'll be picking it up tomorrow!

They are fun bikes. I have a GS750 with an 850 engine I cafe'd, and a GS650. Pretty reliable bikes. Their exhaust systems are solid unlike our's. The gear selector display is cool to have on a bike that old. My 650 is the "L" model, which is equivalent to a Special. All the GS's looked the same up till the '83 GS1100ES. Good score. You won't find it as powerful as the XS though.

I picked her up today and let me tell you, she is flawless! I got her home and it was already dark so no work was done today. I think she'll purr like a kitten tomorrow!

When I got there, the seller asked me if I was parting it out or getting her back on the road. I must have answered correctly because he threw in the side covers and windjammer lowers for free! What a guy! One lower alone costs more than I paid for the bike!

Looks like Windjammer IV. It'll say on the tag around the electrical plug.

The lowers should be type 2 if they are for that bike. The XS uses the same ones on a type IV.

          Nice

the exhausts look real good too. Clean the carbs, change the fluids, and it should start right up I bet.

There's not a speck of rust on the exhaust! The tips aren't even black from soot! The seller told me he owned it for six months and he's done some carb work. I'm hoping that's why it doesn't currently run.

Greg, the lowers are type 2. The seller didn't include the hardware to attach them, however. How do they attach?

Side by side, the Vetter is dwarfed by the pacifico. It's hard to believe they use the same mount.

Couldn't see a sideview, but the well-nuts are likely still in the holes at lower portion of fairing. If not, your local Ace or TruValu has them in those 'specialty' drawers. The button head allenhead bolts mated to the wellnuts make for a nice look for attaching the lowers.

Personally I'd pop $30 for the correct mounting bolts and inserts. That's what I did and it makes it a TON easier to install and remove them as needed. I can send you a link where to get them if you like.

That's why the Pacifico has the extra stabilizing mount on top.

But look at both fairings from the side.... A barn door and a big nose. The nose cuts the air MUCH better, IMHO.

I bought this bike for the windjammer, but I think I'll leave it on the suzuki. I went out today and I took some more pics so I figure I may as well post 'em. I know how much you guys like pics! I haven't cleaned her up or even worked on her other than remounting the fairing. She sure does like to be photographed though.

That 80 GS550 brings back some memories, I rode one of those around back in the 80's, couldn't kill that thing.

Today, I decided to try my hand at adjusting the valves on this Suzuki. I was so worried that this task would be way above my ability, but it was actually pretty easy. Removing the carbs was way more challenging!

I put off adjusting the valves on the Yamaha for so long! I'm happy I learned on another bike because I do not want to harm my yammy. l have a valve tool on order for the xs11 too but the seller is taking his good old time getting it to the post office. The half moons are on order and I got a good deal on some vesrah valve cover gaskets.

I sold a later model GS550 a couple of weeks ago. That thing screams! If that one of yours were mine, I'd get rid of all the extra components and ride it naked. Take off everything that didn't come in the crate to the dealer. If you're overweight, here's a reason to go on a diet. Get the weight off it and it will go go go!

I have the service manual for that bike. Send me a PM if you want it.

For now, I'm sticking with the fairing only because I don't have ears or a bucket. I haven't found a good replacement set yet. The trunk looks out of place and makes the bike cover a pain to put on and off. It's removed but I'll keep it around. The backrest will be gone soon as well. I'd like to keep the guards and aux lights, though. I like the idea of extra lumens. The coin holder is definitely staying! Unfortunately, it looks like my gut is also staying.

I'm excited to hear this bike run. It's such a small displacement motor to be a 4 cyl. I'm hoping it sounds something like a F1 car. I haven't tried to start her yet. So far, I've checked the valves and they are all within spec. I've cleaned the carbs the best I can without soaking them in chemdip, and I've replaced most of the o-rings. I still have to "air tight" the air box, get new brake lines, new tires, and a new battery.

The float pins are being a pain. I'm trying to decide on how to get them out. The eleven carbs were easy to do but these bs32's pins won't cooperate. I've seen people use filed down dykes with success but I don't want to go that route. I read on another forum people are using spring loaded center punches to get them out (the "easy" way). Can anyone comment on this method? What size punch would I need (the pin looks the same as the 11)?

The pilot screws are also causing some problems. They won't budge. I pulled the plugs myself so the screws should be within spec but I want them out. I've decided I won't dip the carbs until I've found proper replacements for the pilot screws. I know I will bugger them up on removal. I already have a m6 .50 flat bottom tap on order to clean up those threads.

Greg, do you still have the link handy for the Vetter lowers hardware? It would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Marty. Pm will be sent soon.
