  • gs misfire/backfire

hi, i am trying to get my 82 gs1100 tuned in and i believe i am almost there. the problem i have run into now is that the #three cyl has a backfire if the fuel screw is set where the others are at, but as far as i can tell, if i turn the screw all the way in the backfire stops. i was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on correcting this. thanks

    try again

ok, well i did a test, running the bike with the screw all the way in and found that it seemed to fix the problem at idle but when i held it at 2000rpm it still had the backfire. i am going to take the rack back off and go through the carb again to see if i can locate any problems with the carb.

A backfire can mean a rich condition, but it can also mean a lean condition. If it's running lean, and you turn the screw in, there is no more fuel to burn at idle, so the backfire stops. When you rev it, the other jets opens up and start to supply fuel, but due to the lack of fuel from the pilot circuit, the mix is lean again, so back comes the backfire. I would try to richen the idle mix a bit. Is's not uncommon to have one cylinder run different than the others. If you give it more fuel, I bet that you will cure your problem. Run some carb cleaner additive in the first few tanks of gas , then check the plugs. A partially blocked pilot circuit may clear itself and will show up a as rich running cyl, fouling the plug. You will have to recalibrate the pilot circuit on that carb.
