  • New bike maybe, 79 XS750. Any Issues?

Looking at picking up another winter project, 1979 XS 750 special. 43000kms just serviced, new brakes, fresh oil and fuel filters. Dudes' getting married on the weekend and needs cash. Asking $1000, but he'll probably bite lower. Anything major with these that I should be looking for? (other than frame damage and neglect). Looks to be totally unmodified.

      Hey Garagamus,
Nice Bikes. It's missing a cylinder but they seem to run just fine on 3

There is a family for the triples here:

        http://www.yamaha-triples.org/catego...p?showall=true

The only big issue for the triple is second gear can get rounded dogs/holes, same as the XS11 first and second gears.

I find parts for the XS750 are cheaper on eBay than the equivalent XS11 parts.

Great bike I bought a new XS750 2D back in 77 kept it for two years and sold it, a month later I regretted selling it and went out and bought the exact same model again. Other than changing the oil and plugs and adding some accessories I did very little to either of mine. Although they don't have the same power as the XS11 they, if my memory serves me right, seemed to handle and stop better than any of my 11s.

I don't know about Medicine Hat, but here in Georgia, $1000 is way too much for an XS750 Special. I just looked at a nice one for $400 and I determined it to be too much. eBay results say it had better be perfect for $1000. The XS750 is the least desirable of the Specials. Having said that, I don't believe there's anything wrong with them. 2nd gear can be an issue, same as the XS11.

Thats the problem I'm finding out here JetMech. $1000 for a running bike of any kind seems to be the norm. 10 years ago, it was simple to find a bike in someones garage that hadn't been ridden since the 80's. Used to be that a couple hundred bucks took it off someones hands that needed the space, now with the bobber and cafe craze becoming the next big thing, (at least in my part of Canada), everyone thinks whatever POS non or barley running bike they have from the late seventies is worth its weight in gold. I know in Calgary, theres a couple of builders that do nothing but buy up the cheap bikes and sell them as donors for crazy $$, and at that price you still have to commission them to build it how you want it for added cost, (I've seen XS650's go for $2500 before adding another 5k to customize it). The finished results are impressive, and certainly cheaper than new built custom choppers, but its leaving all the backyard mechanics at a loss as to where to find cheap projects for themselves.
