  • SWMBO is looking

Wife is looking at a 98 XV1100 Virago. Immaculately clean and very well maintained. 36,000 miles. They're asking $1,800.
Anyone have experience with this model?

Too small gas tank, the usual....

The Virago has been in production for a long time now, so they must have done something right. Personally, I don't like the look, but...I've never ridden one either. The price would make all the extra fuel stops worth while.

Early Viragos ('81 -'83 750, 920) had an ongoing problem with starters, but was fixed in later years. Do an internet search on virago and you will get a lot of hits from owner's clubs and pages to look at.

          Virago starters

Yep - heard about that too..... Think I have a downloaded Yam Workshop manual fix page somewhere if it proves to be prob for anyone...

My worry would be that SHMBO may want you to do all the polishing too....not my strength!!

Fortunately she's very proud of being a rider. She takes pride in her ride and keeps it very clean. When she has a problem with it she tells me about it so that either I can advise her as to if it's a problem and tell her or show her how to fix it.
I feel it's important that anyone that rides know how to do repairs. If you have a breakdown in a car you have shelter till help arrives. On a bike you are out in the open and may not have anyone with bike knowledge stop to help.
So I have SWMBO and SWMOB (with my help).

I've had factory training on this problem and over the years, I've developed a few tricks of my own for handling it.

If I had one of these bikes, I'd always have a spare gasket, springs and shims on hand so I could service the starter and starter drive without having to order parts. This isn't as bad as it sounds, maybe $50~60 worth of bits and other than the gasket it would fit in a 3" cube sized box.

I almost bought a 920 Euro modle but it was a dog compaired to my old Guzzi so I fixed up the Guzzi instead. At the time the Guzzi was pretty bent up from an impact with a car.

                Hi
I know it's a little late to reply...
I had one for 6 month and I just can say: it's a good bike for ladies cause seat is low and this bike is easy to handle.
Only problem: from time to time, one cylinder failed (CDI or coil ?)
I sold the bike before to fix the problem, so I'll never know

Although the Virago is discontinued, the engine is employed on the new "Bulldog", so there is no problem for spare parts.
