  • Yamaha XS850 Wiring Help

    Hi XS1100 Gang,

I am new to the motorcycle crowd and picked up a Yamaha XS850 last week. Since then, I have ridden it as much as possible, although a wiring problem currently has me puzzled. The lights went out one night when I was practicing close to my house. I limped back home and removed the front head light. After shifting some of the wiring in there, I inadvertantly blew the Main (20amp) fuse because the head lights wiring harness ground cable was exposed. It took a trip to Kragen to buy a new harness (to fit the H4 headlamp side). I also bought a new headlamp but it still doens't work. Does anyone know about the wireing on these bikes ? My email is ebholmes@ucdavis.edu

    Cheers,

    Eric

    Fuse Block bad connectors

Well, after some inspection, I decided to clean the fuse block connectors. They are pop in cylindrical fuses and original so, when I poped the started fuse out to clean the contacts it broke off !! I have had various other problems with the fuse block as well, but this time I used alchol to clean the contacts and replaced the started fuse with a standard auto type. Anyway, that alone seemed to have solved the problem.

Any ideas on where to get a new fuse box so I can rewire them all ?

      Bike Layout info

Another thing for those of you tinkering with this bike:

I have a hard time getting the front headlight back in.

It is seriously a pain. There are 3 short screws to connect an outer metal shroud to another fixed mount for the head light. Any modifications to make this process easier ?

Check the Tips section, you'll see a fuse block modiication. Also do a search to find other discussions on that - what to buy and where, etc.

Can't help with the head light.

Buy three longer screws, problem solved. Look for a fastener supplier in your area. They'll have what you need.

            thanks guys

Well, electrical problem is solved for the short term. I have a slight modification with that one fuse whose conector broke. The headlight is in place. I rode it around and it doesn't vibrate excessively.

            Now I'm leaking fuel.

I think from the look of it, that it must be a craked fuel line to the carburetor (under the gas tank I suppose) that heats up, leaks gas and then as it cools off (after riding and engine off) slows to a drip and stops.

My next plan of attack is to remove the tank and check those lines. The Yamaha Triples Site was a great help for XS850 schematics so far.

Don't carburetors need some attention as a routine maintainance ? I'll have to figure out how to do this also

              carbs

I can't say on your particular bike but on our 11's we spend more time cleaning and adjusting than riding, just kiding but you have to be methodical when cleaning and re-assembling,that can not be stressed enogh(the dreded tripple clean...lol).But dont get discouraged its all worth it in the end.Good luck and safe riding.

                For sure

That seems to be the case, as many adjustments and tune up things need to happen. Another biggie for me is the oil change. I don't have a socket set, but I think I'll invest in one just to make this process easier. Otherwise, there is a toolkit under the seat. I wonder whats in there !?

Not cracked line, coming from black box

well, I have created another post to address this issue, which I now feel to be related somehow to the petcocks. There is a black hose coming from what I believe is an aircleaner (next to carbs) which looks like a black box. I just ran it a little with one petcock set to reserve and the other set to primary, and no leak yet. I wonder what the relationship is.

I need to head over to Rancho Cordova Motorcycle recyclers to pick up some new pipes. Maybe I can run some new lines when I figure out what the purpose of this little black tube it.

At first I thought it was a broken fuel line, but it isn't in the right spot. It seems the fuel tank goes throught the petcocks, then to the carbs.

Not sure if the fuse box is still a concern for you, but if you dont feel like replacing it with an automotive accessory fuse box, you can check out the OEM style on MikesXS. Don't ask Mike if it will fit your bike, look at the picture. Mike won't answer any questions about XS650 to bike XXX compatibility. Good prices on hard to find parts, if you can cross check them yourself.

                      Thanks!!

Thanks for that tip? Did you include the URL already? I'll check the original post. I am needing a lot of things for this particular bike, not the least of which are a new fuel tank and some carb rebuild kits? Any word on a source that costs less than $30/carb?

Mike's XS is www.mikesxs.com You may have luck with carb kits there as well, but I haven't ever checked into an 850. www.partsnmoreonline.com is another good place to check.
